1979 Case Appaloosa Prototype/ Help!

Hello to all,

I have a 1978 Case Peanut, Appaloosa, 6220, 2 dot. I have been told this is a prototype. Here is the info I have thus far...

This knife was made for production in 1978 and 1979 with blade etch of Appaloosa. All prototypes are rare, but this one is really different. It comes with a letter of Authenticity signed by John Cummiskey, Jr. a former Vice President of Manufacturing for W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery, It is in mint condition. This knife has a shield, the regular production Appaloosa knives do not have a shield. This is also a fine knife in that the handles are thicker than normal.

I'm hoping that someone will be able to shed some light & even possibly help me assess the value. I'm posting pics & will try to an to answer any questions.

I would have no reason to doubt that it is an authentic prototype especially with the letter.

Thanks Steve! My knowledge of case knives is extremely limited. I was hoping some of you good folks would help steer me in the right direction. I plan to keep this one for my collection but was wonder how to gauge its value.

Any thoughts?

I know that Buzz Parker and Ed Henley still authenticate and value older Case knives. I do not know what he charges for the service. I tend to agree with Steve P, the letter helps the provenance ALOT!

nice little peanut, rust on the tang stamp area needs cleaned up.... the shield is kind of poorly fitted for a specialty knife that a big wig from Case would give out...the letter is it real? looks like a copy of a letter from the jpg. you submitted.

Hi Sue,

Your questions are my questions. I really don't know if the letter is real. I used my scanner to upload the letter. I thought would be better presented that way. There is no rust to the knife but rather old, dried oil. I have since cleaned it.

My big questions are...why no etching to the blade & why would it have the shield? I appreciate your questions & scrutiny. I'm hopeful we'll eventually have all answers. Jan mentioned Buzz Parker & Ed Henley for authentication. I tried to send Ed a mesg. but we have to be friends 1st. & so I'm in a holding pattern.
