I have an oak tree on my farm with a burl about 18"x36" that recently died. Does anyone know how to preserve it to make knife handles

First...let it dry for a couple of years. After that you can cut it up into knife sized pieces and have it stabilised.

Hey there Ted!  yep.  Alexander is spot on.  To get to stabilization it needs to be 80% dry, should take about 2 years.  Just through it in the barn out of your way for a while.  Good to see you!!

Hello Ted, I'm new here and been reading some threads. I have used burls for years for ornamental book-ends and unique picture frames. I get my burls off of blow downs mostly then I peel off the bark & put them in my oven for 8-10 hours at 150' this is enough heat to remove the moisture without burning or warping the wood. I hope you have good luck with it!
