Collector Or Not Collector That Is The Question Or is it the Price???

I'm not quite a veteran of eBay as a seller yet, Ive been in the game for only 2 years, however it's clear that you don't have to be a genius to know that eBay prices by other sellers fail to have a medium when it comes to selling knives, just what are we basing our prices on? nine times out of ten, and this is just my own opinion, we base them on how much pleasure the knife has given us and we are at a point where we are no longer emotionally attached to the item so we will sell it. Perhaps for some reason we believe, that the blade holds the same emotion for us as it does for someone else, this might be the reason for the difference in the wacky eBay prices. So what does that mean? I think In some weird way, it means that it really isn't  about money.  How many times have you see a knife on eBay, that you know is worth more, but the seller is only selling it at a little more than half price? should we punish him for his nativity?  How does that make you feel angry? confused?  Is this guy making fun of  my collectible vice or what? How about this, He just wants to sell a knife, and make some money that's OK isn't it? that's what eBay is for right.  My opinion these people are not our enemy,  they just want to sell something and I think that's OK. Then there's the knife collector who bumps up the price of the item knowing it's rare and that we as knife collectors want it badly.  So what happens? we see a knife we want, New in a box with a jacked up price, it has 34 watchers it's been up for 6 months! you guys have seen that! probably some of us have even done that.  Then some guy comes along with the same knife sells it for half the price, so what does that do to you selling your knife?  Is it now worth less?? do you feel violated in some weird way? what does this guy do to the value of knife collecting? My opinion , nothing. Is not an insult to all of us who hold our knife collection so dearly to our hearts?   Maybe, Maybe not. Maybe he just wants to sell a knife.  It's not his fault that he came across something that is super rare to us and means nothing to him but some quick cash.   I tell you what though, I won't hold a grudge. I love knives and all you knife collectors out there whatever the knife is worth to you I respect that and I promise not make a mockery of what might be your first love.  But let's not hate people who want to just sell stuff.  Remember we decided to do this, if we start getting angry over knife prices, Maybe we should just give up this hobby.  It's suppose to be fun remember? When it comes to collecting there is no medium pricing, The medium exists in your mind and in your heart and it may not be the same for someone else.  So what does this mean?? In my opinion it means you cannot put a price on a passion.  But lets not punish some guy because he happens to have a 1 of  27 serial number rare knife selling for $7000 it does happens you've seen it, Ive seen it.  We don't know his situation and I'm not gonna get angry over it, it's not worth it. Remeber Knife Collecting is a planet all to itself you either breathe in the air with the rest of us or you don't.  I'm a knife lover so are all of you, and lets not forget if a guy who is not a collector sells his $7000 knife for $3.00, I wont get angry, Hell,  Maybe I'll buy it because it completes my collection.  After all we know damn well I'm not gonna sell it!! Will you??

I hope to hear from you on this topic ! =)

Not being a seller much it never seems to bother me.  It is either a knife I want and am willing to pay for or I will have to wait until I can.  After 40 years of collecting, I can assure you.  The knife WILL come back around to you at some point

I have fewer responsibilities than most of my knife collecting friends, which translates to more time searching out the good deal. I love a good deal. I enjoy knowing I got a good deal on a particular knife as much as I enjoy having it...well, almost as much. Getting a good deal can just be luck, but most times it's from spending hours at the computer, watching knives sell that you can't afford, and building up knowledge so you recognize the good deal when it comes along. I have to agree with Omar, that the value of a knife is dependent on the individual. I've made ridiculous bids on knives, that's to say ridiculous to someone else. A friend asked me what the fair price of a particular knife was and I told him, It just depends whether it's the first knife in a small collection, or the last one you need to complete that collection. I can't imagine selling my newly acquired Schrade NRA Screaming Eagle Bowie so evidently I think it's worth more than the seller did....and I got a killer deal on it.

Omar-To me, it is the constant battle between the collector informed and the collector uninformed.- Surely, it makes us knife folks scratch our heads as to what a knife is currently worth, but it also offers an opportunity for some amazing finds !! I'm retired now, so for me half of the fun is scouring pawn shops and antique shops for that inexpensively purchased knife that is worth many times what I pay for it. I also research hundreds of knives here at IKC and nothing gives me greater joy than to tell another member that his inexpensive purchase is worth many, many times more. Here is one I recently evaluated- An $8 knife purchased at an estate sale worth thousands of dollars.  http://iknifecollector.com/forum/topics/case-6592

I also see a trend where a knife is so rare, that it's true value is never appreciated. I have researched hi-quality knives that were made by little-known companies, that usually sold for a fraction of their book value, due to the fact that the potential buyers had no clue to the knife's history or value. Too Rare to become valuable rare ??
