Info on a RARE PUMA knife!!!!!

I have a 10" Puma Solingen model 6320 Bowie Scout knife with the Abercrombie & Fitch Made in Germany engraving in the blade. It has a curved stag handle which is consistent with this model knife. I have the original sheath that is in great condition. The knife isn't in mint condition but is in very good condition with the exception of some surface scratches. All I know is that is was made during the 40's or 50's. I know it is rare to find a regular 10" Puma Solingen 6320 Bowie Scout knife but to find one with the A&F engraving is extremely rare and are sought after by collectors. Any information would be would be that valuable but the date of manufacture and obviously the value in today's market. Thank you so much for your time, patience, knowledge. Indeed, based upon your description, you do indeed have an extremely rare Puma Bowie Scout. Unfortunately, I cannot add much more to what you already know. Post World War II PUMA entered into a collaborative relationship with upscale Sporting Goods Dealer, Abercrombie & Fitch. Puma wanted to sell knives into the American market, A&F wanted quality knives for its sporting goods stores and catalogs.

The late 40's, 50's and 60's era was the time period for this effort. A&F went bankrupt in 1977 and was later bought by Limited Brands in 1988. It reorganized more into a clothing store and away from sporting goods.

The 6320 Scout you have is most likely from the 50's or 60's. All of the Scout knives were never given a control number which indicated its year of production. The control number was introduced by PUMA in late 1964. Given that, there is no way to accurately date your knife.

I can tell you that the 6320 is the biggest of the Scouts, is more rare than the other Scouts, given its appeal to limited number of consumers who only wanted the big blade. The A&F etching makes it even more rare to survive the time period when few people were collectors then. ( most were users).

Sorry,I cannot help with the value of your knife. I do not remember seeing one for sale. I personally don't have one in my collection.

Ken you are a GOD!!! You have been the only person able to provide ANY information on this knife!!! I can't thank you enough. The million dollar question is the value of my knife. I already tried Puma Hunter and he couldn't even provide the information that you did. I'm still waiting for a reply from Puma Man who actually owns one but its been almost a week and I haven't got a call or e-mail. I'm looking to sell this knife but I can't until I find out the value of it in the condition it's in. I'm waiting for a reply from a member of iknife that is supposed to be very knowledgable with Puma knives. If your interested in purchasing I'll let you know when I find out a solid value and you will be the first to have the opportunity. Thanks again!!

Hey Ken. I was wondering if you knew if all the 6320 Bowie Scout were made exactly the same? I noticed several distinct differences in my knife and the 6320 that Puma Man has. First off the finger guard was on only on side of my knife and both on Puma Man's. Second my knife has the A&F stamp on the side where it says Puma Solingen his on the 6320 side and the stamp looks to be 2" lower on the blade. One more thing there are a total of 8 rivets on my sheath and 9 on his. This is driving me crazy. If you want pictures send me your e-mail. If you find out anything else please let me know. I don't mean to bother you it's just driving me nuts!!!

Bill,

The most accurate answer is No, models were not always made the same! PUMA was always making small modifications to their models. It drives collectors like me crazy at times. Take a look at my site for the Pre-64 White Hunters. You will see what I mean. For this one model there were 8 Plus modifications. Commonly, they would stamp or etch the name or model number on the obverse and reverse of the blade.

Without the control number, a.k.a., production code, it is difficult to say which one was first, yours or Puma Knife Man. I would only be speculating to try and answer that and probably would be wrong.

As Puma transitioned from making war time knives and swords, there was a lot of experimentation with models that would be popular in new markets.

Hope this helps ease that "driving me crazy" feeling we all get...
