im not sure how long a FULL BAN in CALIFORNIA has been in place but here is a quote from the link

Thanks for this unfortunate news Peter. But it certainly does affect all folks who enjoy ivory as a knife handle. And then to crush what is there? Well it makes no sense to me and it would appear in a free market make it even more valuable and sought after?

On the one hand that's true Steve. But it also makes it more difficult for people who pretend to sell "legal" ivory.

If there's no such thing as legal ivory, then it's easy to spot people who're selling illegal ivory.

It saddens me though because if they sold all the ivory that has been stockpiled from seizures and "cullings" (in some african parks there are too many elephants and because of this they ruin the local ecosystem, therefore thousands every year are "culled" and often the tusks are sawn off and stored somewhere in a wharehouse.) I think the market price would drop soo hard that illegal ivory trade would simply not be profitable anymore.
