Knife Rights’ Vermont Switchblade Ban Repeal bill that was incorporated into the “Court Procedure; Criminal Procedure; Miscellaneous Amendments” bill, S.109, has been signed by Governor Phil Scott.

The effective date of the repeal is July 2, 2025.

The bill removes “switchblade knives” from the existing statute that bans a "switchblade knife, the blade of which is three inches or more in length" (§4013). S.109 also requires that "the Court" shall order the expungement of any conviction prior to July 1, 2025. This is the first time one of our bills has incorporated an expungement clause.

We sincerely appreciate the efforts of longtime Knife Rights friend Senator Patrick Brennan who we have supported for over a decade as he has worked in the House and now in the Senate to repeal the state’s ban on switchblade (automatic) knives three inches or more in length.

Vermont has Constitutional (Permitless) Carry so, prior to this bill you could carry any legal firearm open or concealed and you could carry any knife open or concealed except a switchblade with a blade 3 inches or longer. Until now, that’s the only knife that you weren’t allowed to even possess in Vermont.

Knife Rights is proud to have finally succeeded in getting rid of this archaic and irrational knife ban. Knife Rights has led the effort to repeal switchblade bans or restrictions in 21 states, starting with New Hampshire in 2010. Repeals have since been enacted in Alaska, Colorado, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Maine, Michigan, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Wisconsin, and now, Vermont!

Knife Rights is America’s grassroots knife owners’ organization; leading the fight to Rewrite Knife Law in America™ and forging a Sharper Future for all Americans™. Knife Rights efforts have resulted in 54 bills enacted repealing knife bans and protecting knife owners in 33 states and over 200 cities and towns since 2010.
