Found LAMSON steel today marked: US LAMSON 1952, DA-11-009-QM-13851. The overall length of the steel including handle is 15".

Question is: this steel has no lines cut into the length of the steel. It is slick. Are some steels this way like sort of a "finishing steel"? Any help appreciated.

Thank You,

Duke Gilleland

There are grooved Steels and smooth Steels.

Smooth Steels can be either steel or glass, and are more appropriate for beginning to intermediate use, as one can hone the blade on it more often without taking off too much blade metal.

Grooved Steels are more appropriate for intermediate to advanced use, as it can provide for a quicker straightening of the blade edge, but with overuse this type of Steel can take away too much blade metal and potentially distort the blade edge.
