So what do you think?

I think the French Kate's are going to be next. The last word I had on the Great Eastern 72 was that they had ordered and were awaiting the blade steel. Should be soon after the 28's I would think. The GEC production schedule is always subject to change.

Hey Bob,

Thanks so much for the spring answer and also the Stainless response.

Jan,   I just don't see a use for this blade?  Kinda looks out of place to me.  I understand about the  big spear on the sunfish being smacked with a mallet for rope use, but this one has me baffled????   jay

Its for cutting stuff, just like clip blades or any other design.  Large spear blades like this have  been used for over 100 years on both big and small jacks.  GECs smaller dogleg jack has a smaller version of this same blade, and it seems very popular. I prefer this blade actually over the clip style.

David,

Thanks for the uses, I had not seen this thread in a few days.  Large spear blades seem to have a large following.  The whittler blade has always been my favorite but I have heard from many this week that they have been waiting for this blade to come out.  Most of those have been from camping friends that use it outdoors to cut small limbs and such.

Can someone tell me how wide this knife is, measured from the back of the blade to the back of the handle?  (at its widest in the closed position) --  Also, does this one lock up tight?  No blade play or movement at all?  Seems I read that some of the first 72s had some issues with that.  TIA

Gotcha covered Bass.

According to my trusty Starrett machinists caliper the Spear Blade #72 measures 1.335" at its widest point when closed, (top of blade to back of knife frame).  The Wharncliffe blade #72 is slightly less.

I hope this helps.

I've been carrying and using a couple of the previous run Tidioute #72's and find they both lock up solid with no blade play, the only exception being the very first PPP release with the Clip blade which does have a very slight amount of movement in the lock, just about enough of a gap to slip a piece of thin bond paper between the locking bar and the blade back, but not enough to effect the safety and integrity of the lock in any way.  My second Tidioute  #72, which was released a bit later, locks up like a bank vault with absolutely no play what so ever, so I believe the issue was addressed by GEC and taken care of early on.

I'm finding these #72's to be extremely fine Lockbacks.

That does help, Dave.  Thanks.

Thanks for the info Dave, I did not realize the PPP had that small movement.  Glad its been addressed
