Welcome Home...THANK YOU FOR BEING A PART OF OUR COMMUNITY

I have been taking some time to wipe-down and examine most of my small collection of knives while over the holiday.  I have a RR Long Rifle stockman that is 6 bladed.  I start to  look at the blades, and was wondering what you all would call the different blades contained in the knife. (Besides too many! LOL!)  Anyway, here is a pic (not my knife!) so you can just give the number and your name for the blade.

Thanks and Stay Sharp!

1- spey 2 clip? 3 warncliffe 4 drop point? 5 clip 6 Pen?That's what I think, but I may be wrong.

1 - Spey

2 - Small clip

3 - Sheepsfoot

4 - Spear

5 - Clip

6 - Pen

This is precisely why I asked this question - becasue we all have our names for the blade types, and they vary from manufacturer to manufacturer.  Just like the RR Work Knife is Case's "Sodbuster".    So I guess the real question is what makes each blade type what it is?  For example, what makes a "Spear" blade a Spear as opposed to a "Pen"?  What is the difference between a drop point, and a clip point?  Etc.

Spear blades are larger versions of  a pen blade. The Case "Sodbuster is actually a single blade Jack Knife that Case decided to call a "Sodbuster". I remember seeing pictures of the "Sodbuster" made in France back around the turn of the century - 1900.

The blade shapes/designs usually go by what is traditional. The names I listed are not just my opinion, but also what SMKW calls them and most old knife companies call them. There are many pictures of the blade designs shown by the old companies with the names of the blades. Sometimes there may be some variance in what some companies caal the various blades, such as the coping blade being called a "Cut-Off Pen Blade", or "Bevel Point".

Here's a few guides, there are MANY more out there, many in various knife books;
