On a side note Victorinox Whistle knife Vs. the Oscar Mayer Weiner Whistle

I posted this originally in SharpFans.  The background was I lost my survival whistle and te only thing I had to toss in my bail out bad was an Oscar Mayer Weiner Whistle, which sent me on quest for a decent whistle.   This led to a review of the Victorinox Whistle Knife

--

As some of you may recall, I lost my whistle for my EDC emergency kit
and was using an Oscar Mayer Weiner whistle for a substitute.
Surprisingly, whistle technology seems to have come along way in the
last 20 or so years. In any case, one of the whistles I bought was the
Victorinox Whistle Knife (VN-53933)  Here is how it stacks up against
my Oscar Mayer Weiner Whistle.

The rumble in the Wilderness: Wiener Whistle vs. the Victorinox knife whistle.

Before I even begin, let me say, that I not only love Victorinox
knives I also love Oscar Mayer Hot dogs.  As such,  it was hard to
choose who makes the better whistle.  For this reason I’m rating the
two whistles side by side based on several characteristics.

 All areas are scored on a scale of 0-10 with 10 being the highest.

Volume.
OMWW-  Actually pretty loud.  It is no storm whistle but louder than a
referee whistles

Vic- Also quite loud but the OMWW  is actually louder

OMWW= 8
Vic =6

Tone:

OMWW-  The whistle comes with small finger holes making it a musical
instrument!  It can make 4 distinct pitches from low to high depending
on how you cover and uncover the holes.  I’m not how sure that would
help in a  survival situation but you never know.

Vic: The tone can only change by you making changes the strength of
your on breath.  The OMWW can do this as will.

OMWW= 10
Vic = 0

Hands Free operation.

OMWW - the shape of the whistle makes it very difficult for hands free
operation. It can be done, but only with practice.

Vic -  ditto for the Vic.

OMWW = 1
Vic = 1

Carry:
OMWW – Pocket or hand carry only.  There is no key ring or bail to
allow lanyard carry.

Vic -  Key ring allows lanyard carry.

OMWW = 0
Vic= 10

Other features:
OMWW- - Doubles as a musical instrument,  Maybe you could imitate bird
sounds with it and attract a meal.

Vic – Also a SD knife minus the toothpick.  Probably not a knife
you’re going to want as the only knife you have in a survival
situation.

OMWW  = 1
Vic= 4

Price:
OMWW are free if you can find an Oscar Mayer Weiner Mobile promotion
otherwise they could cost  a bit.
The Vic with run you $12-18, about the same as an SD knife.

OMWW = 6
Vic = 5

Total score:
OMWW = 26
Vic = 26

In the end, it really comes down to which is more important.  If you
need a louder whistle, go with the Oscar Mayer Whistle. If you want a
whistle less likely to get lost (also important) and you think the
knife may come in handy, then the Victorinox is a better choice.

That said, my actual rescue whistle is now an All Weather Storm Safety
whistle; which is much louder, hands free, and has key ring for a
lanyard.   The Vic will make a decent back-up whistle and is a pretty
cool addition to my Vic collection. The Oscar Mayer Weiner Whistle
will be an Oscar Mayer Weiner Whistle, and that in itself is good
enough.

Interesting! I have never owned an OMWW but I do have the Vic. I also have the Wenger whistle in a larger knife. It is a tube type whistle mounted inside a couple different models of SAK. It is removable but must have the bottom hole closed to operate the whistle. The Wenger whistle is VERY loud. Easily double or triple the Vic.
