Rough Rider is coming out with a line of folders called "Hazardous Swirl" I've seen the Trapper, Coke Bottle, and Mini Trapper advertised at SMKW. Haven't seen any others. But I'm assuming a few other patterns will be made because it would appear the Hazardous Swirl Marlin Spike fell off a truck or something and somehow ended up at my house.
The rich variation of the dark in the middle to the lighter on the ends of the dog leg is unbelievable. I wish now I would have bought 2. I sent mine to my grandson in Nevada.
Steve, it is no secret that I'm not a big fan of swirly plastic. But my problem is I can't see paying top dollar on a knife for Swirly Plastic simply because a famous name is attached to it!
$12 for a Rough Rider marlin spike in swirly plastic? -- I'll take it!
Case knife in Swirly plastic for $60? - No thank you! I expect a quality bone handle for that price!
yes new to this group on ikc I would like to say I collect and and use rr knives my faroites are the big clasp knives I have a red bone I use to skin deer it works well for that skinned 3 deer before I had to touch up the blade I have collections of stag tooth pics and all color bone handles lot of is old yellow box stuff have saved boxes for everyone will post pics there are some pics on my profile page
Jason, That one is the MoD Three Piece Clasp Knife. It is a NATO standard issue VN21307. The original design dates back to WWII when stainless steel slab sided knives were first being made. They were known as Burma Knives as well as numerous other names. The current modek was formerly adopted for British/Commonwealth service in 1952. I'm not sure when Australia fromerly adopted their model.
They make about five or six versions of this clasp knife (some with locking main blades. below are the one, two and three piece versions.
Several companies make civilian copies of the two and three piece companies, often adding a shackle key in place of the can opener. (or just addidn a shackly key or integrating it into the handle. On of the best of the civilian models (as well as the cheapest is the Maxam Sailor's Tool.
The Rough Rider Riggers are designed after the American Pattern.
This pattern is 4 1/2 inches long and only has a single blade and marlin spike. The design uses the bail to lock the spike in place. The design was a adopted by the U.S. Navy and Coast Guard and first issued in 1942. It remains an issue item in both services. The pattern has changed slightly over time with the most noticeable change being the adoption of two thin back springs in stead of one thick back spring. This allows for enough tension to hold the blade and spike in place without making it a "nail breaker" It also reduces the likelihood of the back spring breaking. The Rough Riders feature this later double back spring. Unlike the military issued compostion/delrin handles, most of the RR feature bone.
Thanks, Robert. This is another pattern that I wish Rough Rider would make more of. Why it wasn't done in Pearl/abalone is beyond me. Teak would also be nice.
Thanks Robert. The Mermaid knife is a basic white smooth bone marlin spike made by RR. I drew up the art work and had the work done by TxForce (Brad OBrien)
The Mermaid is known as the Mermaid of Warsaw. (as in Warsaw, Poland) Some day I hope to see the real deal.
Below is the art work and more photos:
I purposelessly wanted the artwork to be a simple line drawing done in black on white bone. I felt simplicity would be the best portrayal. I was very pleased with the end results by Mr. OBrien. The hardest part was adjusting the art work so that the brass pins wouldn't interfere with it.
From what I understand, Polish tradition has it that the art work for the Mermaid always has her: nude, facing left, with a sword in her right arm and shield on the left arm. Her fins are always portrayed to the right. She is the defender of the city and as long as there is a Mermaid of Warsaw, their will be a Poland. There must see some truth to the legend because despite numerous occupations and wars, the Polish people always seem to bounce back and regain independence.
JASON- please post pics when you get one put together. I'm thinking about buying a couple of kits for my Grandson and I to work on together. Let us know what kind of tools you use any special things you need to do to build them. Do you need grinders or buffers? Details please. Thanks very much for being here and sharing with us.
I'm curious as well, Jason. I have the Stockman but never got around to building it. I need to figure out what tools I need and what tools I have to build it.
I'll need to look at it again. Like I said I got the Stockman a while back. A guy was going out of business (an online seller of all sorts of Rough Riders) I picked up a good five or six knives and the kit for around $25. I recall the purchase also included a black pearl sleeve board whittler and a red bone marlin spike. Can't recall the rest but I felt guilty buying them for so little.
Welcome to the addiction. Like many here I have discovered RR to be quality knives and IMHO worth more than the price I paid. I would not hesitate to use any one of them for EDC, not something I can say of others knives in my collection.
My only grip with RR is I don't live close to SMKW so I can only find them through mail order. Wish Academy would be up a contract to carry them.
Unless you have a political objection to knives made in China, it really is hard to find fault in Rough Riders. My only other complaint is there are so few options for certain patterns, especially their Camp/Scout knife. It only comes in red jigged bone and amber jigged bone. The pattern should be better exploited. I've got similar complaints for the Marlin spike and the large toothpick but I can understand that these are less popular patterns.
When you consider how many sunfish and barlows they make, it is hard to justify just two Scout/Camps!
hey i was taking some pics and here are some MARBLES which cmme from the RR factory.. these i piekced up in 2008.. they are still NIB and took out for pics for someone. what i want to show here is that if you aleady go looking for the first knife in the picture.theh HATCHET KNIFE!! gotta love it!... anyway io never even EDC the few i have.. but here like i said for now is just one pic of many io ave taken... let me know what ya think of the bone in that hatchet knife.. please tale the time to look at new ones now.. even from 08 till now.. the new ones are dyed in the middle and thats about it.agan im speaking of the hatchet knife only in this pic.

BUT i also agree with KEN in not feeling guilty about it.. i know it does stink watching good sellers go undeer but lots of timees ,this has bveen the very reason i could afford some of the knives i own...
not to mention that i have been the guy ...hasnt been awhiile as i really watch my knife budget these days.. but that gy that is in sudden panic to sell 2 knives to buy one... thats when i dont feel so guilty.. selling your hard collected knivs for food. gets to me. if your just running around every forum and club trying to sell 3 knives as fast as you can for a new custom... then guilt doesnt even come into the factor.. the WHEELIN AND DEALIN COMES OUT!!!...LOLOL!
Outstanding , Malcolm. What a great scrimshaw. I have a white bone toenail that I may eventually have scrimshawed, I just can't make up my mind on what I want. I've been leaning to a tiger.
