MARBLES are the ones that came with the pocuches!..2008..maybe 09

  • Tobias Gibson

There are moments when it is hard to explain to your wife just why you started laughing out loud while watching a knife show!   I just had one of those moments.   I flipped on Cutlery Corner Network  purely out of curiosity  and within 30 seconds Sheila announced a new line of knives featuring Tom O'Dell!  Apparently Tom has been pushing for a line of his own knives!   I did not know that!    He has two fixed blades so far

    The Redneck Tom Original

I swear the blade etch reminds me of Billie Jean King! LMAO

and the other knife is the Hillbilly Tom  "Still Defender"

I guess he is trying to look like Huck Finn in this blade etch.   I kind of like the shape of this one  (the bottle opener pommel is neat!) but as a person with a hillbilly soul, I'm also a tad insulted.

  • Ron Cooper

Toby, I can definitely see why you would think of Billie Jean King when looking at the Redneck Tom Original. I wonder if Bobby Riggs is on the other side? lol

Real funny, I agree. I saw that game live, years ago.....lol

On the subject of "what to do with old knives in a box that I don;t know what to do with":

If you have no use for them, donate them to a Boy Scout troop, where respect and safety will be taught, and they could be used to reward some boy's special contribution or achievement.

    Just an idea

  • Tobias Gibson

Believe it or not, the Boy Scout Store sell quite a few big folders including some big folders made by Kershaw.  They do have a  5 1/2 inch lockback as well as 4 1/2 inch Tanto linerlock  I've also seen larger folders for sell in the store.

  • frank (nibs) dorman

You guys make some great points, and there would be some discretion, of course.  Having been a boy scout, selling to raise money and working to make something better for the community--then being a leader for many years--your words are exactly right.  Once in a while some knife might appear (or some other equipment) that a leader might find appropriate, some things needing his training/ guidance--maybe for a Paul Bunyon training award.  I was SO proud of a jungle hammock for selling the most (I believe it was seeds) that I still have it (almost 60 yrs later).  Those of you that have used these when really necessary are going to have individual thoughts on this one, but here's mine.

  • frank (nibs) dorman

I was asked about my icon.  It is the tomb of the unknown--in the hurricane--the guys REFUSED to leave, even when asked to just short of a direct order.

  • Ken Spielvogel

Frank, a great icon. That shows true dedication to duty, and respect for the ones who gave their lives. Its "Semper Fidelis" - Always Faithful.

  • Tobias Gibson

By box full of large toothpicks is overflowing

And that doesn't include my Bear & Son or my Rough rider Stoneworx!

  • Ken Spielvogel

    Great collection Tobias

  • Ron Cooper

A BIGGER BOX is the solution to all of our problems!

  • Billy Oneale

    Good looking toothpicks, Tobias.
  • Tobias Gibson

Thanks everyone.  As you can probably tell, these are the Chinese made one (5 Rough Riders, 4 Guardian Angel, 4 Marbles, 3 Schrade, 1 Cat Eye, and 1 Buck)  Of the ones made by these companies, there is one more Marbles floating around and I think 3 Schrade. I'm not concerned too much about the Schrades but do want the other Marbles.  It's as scarce as hens teeth.  Looks sort of like the RR twisted bone knives.  It would also be nice is Rough Rider would make a few more of the five inchers but i doubt they will. I don't think they appeal to collectors as much as other patterns.

  • Howard P Reynolds

    Nice set of Toothpicks, Tobias.

    Robert Burris

Those are nice Toothpicks, Tobias. Why not post us some RR on my new front page blog.? Show us some knives.

  • Tobias Gibson

I'd love to.  Where can I find the new front page blog?

I was thinking of starting a new Mini Group on Novelty Knives. Are there any collectors out there that collect them? Let me know, I have a small but growing collection of them.

  • Tobias Gibson

If you do that, Robert, I'd suggest making it a group for Souvenir, Advertising, and Novelty knives.  You might get more buy in then.

  • In Memoriam

    Robert Burris

Yes that's true and that's what I mean. Thanks for the help.

  • In Memoriam

    Robert Burris

We were talking about how companies have slowed down on advertising knives, I think the same is true for Novelty and Souvenir knives also.

  • In Memoriam

    Robert Burris

Has anyone heard of a knife company called "Novelty Cutlery Co." ? It's a vintage company from the USA.

  • Tobias Gibson

Novelty Cutlery is currently a TM of SMKW. The current production is  in China.

Among the knives are Riders of the silver Screen (Lone Ranger, Red Ryder, Hopalong Cassidy, etc)

They also make little brass tone knives featuring  scenes such as hunting dogs, fish, and horses.

I have two SMKW made Novelty Knives .  The build is pretty decent tor the price (around $5)

  • Tobias Gibson

A quick check shows that the actual name is Novelty Knife Company.  SMKW has owned the TM since 1994.   I'm guessing early production was under contract with Colonial as SMKW had other low priced knives made by Colonial back in the day.

    Robert Burris

Wow thanks Tobias. The ones I'm talking about are from the USA and Germany. I guess they are a few years old, now. I think they are all neat, no matter the origin, as long as they are well built.

  • Tobias Gibson

As I mentioned, the two i have are pretty decent.  I haven't really used either to any extent but they seem solid enough.  I'm not sure if the brass finish on the hunting dog knife will stand the test of time but it looks really well finished right out of the box.

I need a new box fullof knives LOL

  • Howard P Reynolds

Novelty Cutlery Co.  Robert, take a look here.

    https://www.allaboutpocketknives.com/knife_forum/viewtopic.php?f=35...

It says https (secure) so I hope it opens for you.  If not I can cut and paste the info.

  • Tobias Gibson

Great information Howard.  Thanks for sharing.  All About Pocket Knives (AAPK) is a great site -- (just a little too stuffy for me to be member of)  So it would appear Novelty Cutlery is a old company out of Canton Ohio.

  • In Memoriam

    Robert Burris

Wow, thanks for the info. I knew there had to be something more about these knives stamped Novelty Cutlery Co. It's great to hear about their history.

I was thinking of starting a little Mini-Group about all Novelty knives, they deserve their own spot. They have quite a few interesting patterns and I think fun to collect.

  • Howard P Reynolds

    Robert,

I think novelty knives would make a good discussion group.  I don't own any, but would enjoy reading about them.  Give us a warning here.  I find that I miss new topics sometimes because I don't visit the Home page a lot.

    Robert Burris

Will do Howard. I have decided to start it up soon. I need to take a cool picture to start it off.

      I will let you know.

  • Thomas Bennett

    Uncle Henry 153Uh

  • Howard P Reynolds

Never owned an Uncle Henry, but that is a nice fixed-blade.

  • In Memoriam

    Robert Burris

I own one when I was a young man. I think they call it the "Golden Spike" . It's a nice fixed blade.

Great Thomas, the more time you spend here, the more you will enjoy it.

  • Smiling-Knife

Hi Everyone. I was wondering if there is need and interest for a drinking-related knife discussion forum? This would include, bartender's knives, champagne patterns, wine, beer, whisky, soft-drink etc advertising. Or is this already covered by the existing novelty and outdoor categories? Please post your opinions. Cheers!

  • In Memoriam

    Robert Burris

I am not sure, maybe some other members will know.

  • Tobias Gibson

I have a handful of bartender knives but i don't collect enough of them to keep a thread active.  I would have very little to contribute but would definitely lurk on such a thread  I wonder if there is a way to set up "communal albums" of various patterns where people could just show them off for like minded folks.

  • In Memoriam

    Robert Burris

I was thinking [Dangerous] about a Group for unusual pattern knives, of all sorts. Would that work?

  • Tobias Gibson

Be careful what you wish for, Robert

  • In Memoriam

    Robert Burris

    I meant unusual, Tobias......LOL

You know, knives made out of shoes, fish, trains, plains and all sorts of stuff.

We also don't have a little Group about Tool Pattern knives. I know there just has to be a bunch of Members that collect that pattern.

  • Jan Carter

ROFL  Tobias.  That is certainly unusual but a group for unusual could be fun!

  • peter force

    TOBIAS sweet bar knife!

  • Tobias Gibson

    Thanks, Peter.

    Robert Burris

Yes Miss Jan, unusual knives and all types of cutlery, that has been used over time. We might see some pretty interesting things our members have collected over the years. I have a few myself. There would be no limit to what's unusual in the cutlery world. From Fantasy knives to Vintage Working Cutlery. Anything goes. How about that idea?

  • Tobias Gibson

    Brian Wilhoite's Celtic Clover Skinner

  • Howard P Reynolds

Thanks, Tobias, for your overview of a handy little knife.
