my first Shellpuller is on its way..ill put up pics when it gets here.another great knife that i think i would only ever buy the one.got lucky as it was part of a BOX-O-PENCILS buy!
I i have either an AMERICAN BLADE or and NKCA magazine that has a spread of US CLASSICS across the front cover.. being advertised as AMERICAN MADE!!!.. ..their was a massive attempt by someone..not simple confusion.... to try and pass US CLASICS off as USA KNIVES..this magazne article says it all .. it with collection wife has..I ONLY 2 US CLASSICS - they are neat knives..you can date them!.. and if you bought them on ebay during 2007-2010. you most likely bought them from a a man with an auction that said something like "EACH US CLASSIC PATTERN IS A VINTAGE KNIFE BROKEN DOWN and RE-CREATED TO BE EXACT FITS TO THOSE VINTAGE FOLDERS WE ALL LOVE SO MUCH"--or something like tat///but mostly one guy sold them all ///
it wasnt very hard to tell that it was a CHINA MADE KNIFE. not only from the knife itself vs. USA made knives. it just screams OVERSEAS FOLDER{IMO}
but it also had CHINA etched lightly on the blade..but was designed to obviously rub off...
I heard all sorts of controversy about these knives. And the site clearly stated designed in Salt River Kentucky but it als said Made in China In fact at the time I was buying them he the eBay seller (Zix) had it written in very large letters MADE IN CHINA.
I have six U..S Classics and all of them say CHINA on them .It is laser etched on the blade and isn't going to rub off any easier that the etch on a boy scout knife.
The box says "designed in Salt River Kentucky.
The company that made the knives was 3 D's Inc. The three gentleman were friends of Garry Yokum, the guy who owns the Raging Bull TM and sells his knives on eBay under ZIX. I honestly don't think U, S. Classics or ZIX was anymore deceptive than Colonial or Taylor Brands.
Many of my Tayloe Brand knives are not stamped China Anywhere.
Colonial sells several knives that are made in China but are not marked China. The Colonial ones even have a Prov RI tang stamp! but says China nowhere. Not on the knife or the box. The only way you know it isn't American Made is because the ones that are American made say they are American Made!
Frankly I think the controversy over U.S. Classic was started by friends of other knife factories, who didn't like these upstarts turning out good quality knives.
Who ever wrote the article about U.S.Classic had an axe to grind. The company was no less deceptive than may established American companies who also were quietly making knives in China and putting very fine print on the bottom of a package underneath a very big USA flag (BUCK)
Here is the letter that Yokum had on his page about Chinese made knives.
After World War 2, Japan was an occupied nation with few natural resources. The USA wanted Japan to regain its economic independence and financed much of its industry. The US was also one of if not the largest importer of Japanese goods. During that period many people in the US felt that Japanese goods were cheap, not inexpensive, but "Cheap". Chinese goods are held in the same regard by many today. As with Japan, China owes its position in the world to the USA. Do I prefer to buy American Made? Yes. Will I avoid buying a product "just" because its made in China? No.
I thought I saw a discussion or group devoted to Colt Knives somewhere. Does anyone know where it is? And if there isn't one, I'm thinking I'll start a discussion on Box Full of Knives.
Yes it is the Forged in fire on the history channel
n each episode, four master bladesmiths will put their skills and reputations on the line, trying to avoid elimination while using traditional and state-of-the-art tools and machinery to turn raw metal into authentic working versions of classic bladed weapons of yesteryear. In the hands of these gifted craftsmen, every weapon is not just a lethal instrument of war, but also an elegant work of art. The colorful histories of these weapons will be told throughout the forging process. Then the weapons will be assessed and tested by a panel of internationally recognized judges.
I haven't been buying many SMKW housebrands or SFOs since the demise of Knives Live TV. (out of sight, out of mind, i guess!) Anyway, the catalog showed up and they had the 75th anniverasry Red Ryder Boys Knife, so I kinda, sorta had to order it! It's not as good as the old USA made Colonial but i like the red bone better than the Tobacco bone RR Boys knife. I would've preferred it if SMKW had done an SFO with an American Company or just had it done on Victorinox Fieldmaster.
L to R Colonial (USA), 75th Aniv (China), Current Standard (China)

Just the main blade
Shield - you'd think they could've put a R R on the wings of the shield! It's the little details that could've made this thing pop!
I'm not sure if I'm able to do this, so forgive me if I step on toes or bend any rules. I am selling a BenchMade BenchMite, model 3100-401, #41 of 500, rainbow stainless scales, 1.95" blade, spring assisted. Never carried, stored in box with paperwork. Asking $320 or would like to trade for Spyderco Rubicon. Can email pictures on request. Thank you.
And that the difference between your father and me. I had put a Red Ryder BB gun on my Christmas wishlist for about five years before one of mt kids finally figured out I was serious about it! I've been shooting it ever since!

From USA Knifemaker Supply (http://usaknifemaker.com/) comes this announcement:
Good news!
A new TV show on History Channel all about making knives!
The History Channel is currently shooting an elimination style TV show featuring
several knife makers doing their best to win the top prize.
No air dates have been set yet but we believe it will air this fall. Fellow KnifeDog
Mastersmith J. Nielson is one of the judges. Weapons expert Wil Willis will host
along with judges Doug Marcaida and David Baker.
Follow along here: http://knifedogs.com/showthread.php?41057-New-Knife-Making-TV-show-...
The more exposure there is to custom knife making, the better it will be for
all of us in the community.

Years ago when we asked my father what he wanted for christmas he told
us "all I want for Christmas is a Red Ryder BB gun". Well he did not know
that Daisy had just come out with the Red Ryder comm. rifle. So on xmas
day there under the tree was a present for dad, a Red Ryder BB gun.
All he could say was "I will watch what I say around this group from now
on".
He has let all of his grandchildren shoot the BB gun as they came into the
right age and it still resides behind a bedroom door to this day.

I believe that it is stories like this that start us collecting. I mean
collecting is not just about amassing things, its that the things spark
some hidden memory, both good and bad, that we tie to the items.
And watching "Christmas Story" as a family was where the idea of a
Red Ryder came from.
So thanks for the comments.
