  • Ms Data

Few things as pretty as a deeply blued Colt revolver, finally made the trade after a couple of weeks of discussions.  Having a very happy morning!  (No dogs were harmed while photographing this revolver.)

We are excited for you Ron. Can't wait to hear how you like it after putting some rounds through it.

Ron, I knew you wouldn't have any problem with the recoil.  Sorry about the issues.  It will really be fun when you get them worked out.

Steve, I bet shooting that Henry was a lot of fun.  I like lever action rifles.  I have my old Winchester and a Marlin 39A .22.  It is a lot of fun to shoot too.

Hey folks, good news.  A federal district judge has ruled that the ban on interstate sale of handguns is unconstitutional.

I was able to add a small hand gun to my arsenal today. I decided to get a pocket sized gun to carry concealed. Although I like my Taurus PT111 G2, 9mm, I wanted something that could be concealed a little easier. I go this PT 738, .380 today that fits the bill. This is another Taurus but is made in the USA. It fits easily into a coat pocket or even into my front pants pocket. I am anxious to get out to the range to put a few rounds through it.

  • Tobias Gibson

Pretty nice Jeremy.  If it is accurate out to 25 feet then that's all you really need!  The .380 ACP is strictly a defensive round in my book. (or an assassin's round!)  Truly a point blank killer!

Nice one Jeremy.  It is similar to my Ruger LCP.  I really like it.

A friend of mine calls it "A just out of knife range gun."

Good one Jan.  I wish everybody could and would read that.  That expresses it very well.

  • Ms Data

Many of you know that I have been working for quite some time to collect the 3 handguns and 1 rifle models that assassinated Presidents.  The oldest and perhaps the pride of the collection arrived today.  The final piece of the collection should be arriving on Wednesday.  Then there will be framing for display and security and insuring, etc.  But I wanted to share this pic as I am very happy with this 150 year old find.

That is nice Data.  In really great shape too!  I'm happy for you.

  • Jess Cobb

Wow, Data! A great pistol to go with a great collection. I have never heard of anyone assembling that group of firearms together. THAT is really interesting.

  • Tobias Gibson

That is so cool, Data! (in a morbid sort of way)   Oddly, none of these weapons would be affected by any modern gun bans.

Here's the list of weapons used in Presidential assassinations and recent attempted assassinations.

Lincoln:  .41 Caliber Philadelphia Deringer .*

Garfield: .44 caliber British bulldog revolver

McKinley: .32 caliber Iver Johnson ‘Safety Automatic’ revolver.

Kennedy: The 6.5mm Carcano Model 91/38 carbine

Others that could round out the collection

Ford (attempted):  M1911a1  Colt .45 Automatic

Reagan (attempted): .22-calibre Rohm RG-14 revolver

RFK (Presidential Candidate): .22 caliber Iver-Johnson Cadet

And yes the Philadelphia Deringer was spelled with one "R"  At the time it was  known as a muff or pocket pistol.  Because of the Philadelphia Deringer's popularity and widespread use, the name Deringer became a generic term  for any small pistol; with many people either misspelling the name.  Supposedly other makers started using the now generic misspelling in an attempt to sell their muff/pocket pistols as Derringers and avoiding TM infringements!  When Remington marketed its more famous over/under as a  Derringer the new spelling stuck forever!

  • Ms Data

Thanks! Tobias, you are correct but according to Wikipedia there have been more than 20 assassination attempts. I don't think I could afford that. Interesting factoid - when Roosevelt was gut shot while giving a speech he announced to the crowd that he may need to cut his speech short because he had just been shot, then proceeded to speak for more than an hour before they made him stop. That was one tough SOB.
  • Ms Data

Oh - that was Teddy, not Franklin, BTW.
  • Tobias Gibson

From what I recall he was shot  with a .38.  The assassin was going for a head shot but a bystander grabbed the gun and instead Teddy took one to the chest.  He shot through a heavy overcoat, and then through his written speech (50 sheets of folded paper)  and the steel case that held his glasses. The bullet then hit him in the upper right chest.  After the speech he was sent to the hospital, treated for the wound, but the bullet was never removed as it was deemed too risky.

Tobias, you are an encyclopedia of interesting kniowledge!

  • Tobias Gibson

History major followed by a masters in information science.  I get paid to do research. Over the years I've determined the coolest stuff I've learned is the stuff I discovered while researching something else!   I mean how else does one learn that a wallaby's poop is shaped like a cube?!?

  • Ms Data

Psst - I think he meant Wombat, not Wallaby.
  • Tobias Gibson

not the first time I mixed up scat.  Data's correct.  Wombats poop cubes.  Scientists believe it is done in such a fashion as to mark there territory, especially in terrain where round poop would roll away.  Not sure how I got my marsupials confused.

Wallabies on the other hand have the ability to produce two types of milk.  One type is for newborn wallabies and the other type specifically formulated for older wallabies that have already left the pouch!

  • Tobias Gibson

We probably don't want to discuss the unique  anatomy of the only marsupial native to North America.

  • Jan Carter

    LOL you two

O went for a walk on the snow covered mountain and I came back to learn about Teddy R getting shot and baby poop!  I love the things I learn on here

Data, inquiring minds want to know.  How did you know wombats pooped cubes?!  LOL

  • Ms Data

Charles, much like Tobias I am a History buff and I hold a Black Belt in Google.

  • Tobias Gibson

I'm a fifth degree black belt with google.   As i said, I get to paid to do research.  Most of that is in bio-medicine/health sciences these days but research is research.

  • Ms Data

Dang Tobias, I did not realize you do pretty much the same thing that I do.  I work for a large BioMedical research company.

  • Tobias Gibson

Health Science Librarian at Rush University Medical Center, Among other things, work on evidence based patient care plans, and do research for faculty and students. (and do a crap load of cat herding) Oh and then the fun stuff is work on disaster/emergency plans.  We're one of six hospitals in Illinois that are tasked to handle bio-terrorism.  But as my personal web page shows I'm normally researching military history in my free time.
