This deer laid down about 20 yards from me this afternoon.

I was looking through the pictures from my game camera. I found this picture of the same deer that the game camera took just a few minutes before I took the one in my previous comment. In this picture it is only about 25 yards from me but I never saw it until it got to the spot in the picture in my previous comment. There was some brush between me and it but not solid brush. Deer blend in so well with their surroundings that they can be hard to see. From its size it is obviously a this year's fawn even though it has lost its spots

  • allanm

I'm jealous Charles. :-) I don't have access to as much deer as you, or such nice productive land. I only got one during bow season, planning to go back the first week of January though, for the end of modern rifle season.

We only got two "does" (aka either sex) days this season, and then the first week of January. Bow and muzzle loader are always either sex state wide (Virginia), then rifle season had 3 doe days, and only bucks the rest of the season. I think the previous year there were 4 doe days. Our DGIF (game and fisheries) change things around according to reported hunts in different counties.

Allan, we have a total of 20 doe days in the regular gun season this season.  We have already had nine of them.  The remaining 11 doe days start Dec. 23rd.  Also with us does are legal for the entire bow season which runs from Oct. 15 to Feb. 10.

  • allanm

Still jealous of your land and all the photos from your 'cams :-)

I;m thinking of going back for the last week of rifle season, which allows me either sex from Jan 2-7. My wife keeps telling me I need to go back to get more meat for the freezer. Last year with the three I brought home she hardly bought any meat all year. And my cholestorol which was reasonably good anyway, improved quite a bit just eating nice healthy, lean venison.

After Thanksgiving my wife bought a huge turkey and sausage casings, we made maybe close to 20lb of sausage and started eating some on Monday night. It was good, though a little dry. We added bacon (you can never go wrong with bacon!) for flavor and a little fat for moistness but they could have used a bit more. The recipe said throw all the skin in the grinder too (for the fat) but we threw that out in favor of bacon.

Jan, thanks for posting the new CA gun restrictions. Have you ever heard of anything so ridiculous? It's actually worse than that, there is also a provision in prop 63 that will even require registering antique and obsolete guns, so folks who have old family weapons that were handed down will be felons if they don't register those old guns.

Of course I flipped off Sacramento in my own way by ordering a gun today at a local shop. The only problem is that ammo is skyrocketing in price due to "supply and demand". I was quoted a price of $11 for a 50rd box of .22lr's today, so even if we do stock up before the licensing law we will have to pay a premium to do so. Whatever it costs, I fully intend to have 499 rounds of ammo in hand by New Years Day 2018.

I'm telling you, If I didn't have a kid and grandkid here I would be moving to GA, AL, TN, or even Oregon, (or Texas, Arizona, etc, etc). Can't believe how the state where I grew up hunting and fishing in is turning into a second amendment nightmare. The only good news is that one shop owner told me today that several trade organizations are filing suit about the ammo license law, as it goes against federal interstate commerce laws, so at least there is some hope.

When I get my new toy I'll post a pic.

With SHOT SHOW happening this week, I have been on the hunt for who is pre releasing info

the new Road Agent side-by-side 12-gauge coach gun. With its 18.5" fixed-choke barrel, Turkish walnut stock, exposed hammers and double triggers, this shotgun looks like other replicas intended for cowboy action shooting events. What sets it apart from the crowd are the unusual changes to the controls. When the break-action is closed, it automatically cocks the external hammers. A left-side, 3-position lever can be set to the Safe position when the hammers are cocked and used as a decocker to safely drop the hammers for reloading or emptying the shotgun. It’s a fast system that's easy to use. MSRP: $499

    American Tactical Shotguns
After a two-year wait, American Tactical says its AR-pattern semi-automatic Omni MAXX .410 shotgun is finally ready to ship. The shotgun uses a gas-operated, short-stroke, balance piston system designed to fire a variety of 2.5" .410 shotgun shells including birdshot, buckshot and mixed payload options. The 18.5" smooth-bore barrel is threaded to accept Remington-style removable chokes. Built around a set of the company's Omni Hybrid aluminum reinforced polymer AR-15 receivers, the lower receiver assembly is fully compatible with AR uppers chambered in other calibers such as 5.56 NATO and .300 BLK. These shotguns ship with one removable 5-round magazine, while 15-round magazines will be sold separately. MSRP: $649.95

  • Clint Thompson

Nice Jan thanks for the update on these two exciting weapons.

  • Syd Carr

Love the looks of that Road Agent coach gun Jan, just the thing for "Cowboy Action Skeet" competitions, which requires a period-correct weapon to compete with. That is something I have thought about trying one of these days. Can't you just see me in full mountain man buckskins with that side by side?

I didn't see a thread for "what's your newest firearm purchase", so thought I'd post here. Despite living in Kalifornia, I finally decided on a home defense/survival/hunting weapon to augment the little single shot .22 I have in the corner. That little plinker is all I have left after losing all my other weapons in a burglary years ago. Though I don't hunt anymore, it felt weird not having a "real" weapon on hand, so decided to scratch that itch before the state bans firearms altogether, (which is eventually what they will try to do I suspect). I considered a few different options, but finally decided this would be a good all purpose gun to have around; just ordered it online, should ship by mid week. Mossberg Maverick 88 12ga, 24" barrel, (smooth bore but with rifle sights). After weighing all the options, including cost of ammo, I decided this covered all the bases. Best bang for my buck so to speak, USA-made, affordable, parts available, and more importantly, legal in CA, (at least for now). It comes with adjustable choke, and despite the shortish barrel would suffice for wing shooting in a pinch, & with rifle sights could serve as a slug gun too. Couldn't find a decent photo, so will post one after it arrives, (which of course will happen after the intrusive 10 day long background check process I will have to endure after it arrives). It is being shipped to the local FFL dealer. I also have begun stockpiling ammo prior to the 2018 requirement to purchase a license just to buy ammo in this state. I figure I better stock up now while I can.

Maybe this will distract me for a while and prevent me from spending too much money on knives? (Yeah sure, like that's gonna happen).

I'm considering a new project: A semi-auto version of an Israeli DROR. Second pattern in 8mm. So far I've bought a nice barrel. During the 1940s, Israel needed guns. They had a surplus of .303 British ammo so the first model of the DROR was in .303 British.

The Israeli DROR was derived from the 1941/44 Johnson LMG.The second model was made in 8mm to improve on feeding. The .303 is a rimmed cartridge and the magazines had to be long and sharply curved. The 8mm has no rim and could be fed from altered 1918 BAR magazines.

Copies of the 1941 Johnson LMG, and the Israeli DROR have been recreated from surplus Johnson JSAR actions. This will be my approach. If anyone out there has any 1941 Johnson or DROR parts to sell or trade, please let me know. Stand by for updates.

Not quite firearm arsenal - but bows are used for hunting as much as rifles - MidwayUSA has a Rage broadhead promotion going on, and there is also a $10 rebate per package from Rage themselves.

At least one person in a club I joined swears by Rage, and brings home many deer every year.

  • allanm

I forgot to say - check the rebate form - the Kore line is not included, X-Treme2 is covered. Yesterday they had a 3rd model on sale which might be out of stock by now. I just bought 3 packs of 3 broadheads at $14.99/pack (list $49.99), and should get back $30 of that from Rage. I called their number to confirm the rebate is 10 per pack not 10 per total purchase.

$5 for 3 broadheads can't be beaten, even the cheapest Allen (not my brand!) or other Walmart cheapest don't cost that little

Allan, things bow are just fine in the Arsenal.  After all men were killing each other with bows long before guns were invented.  And thanks for the heads up on the broadheads.

    BTW I shoot a crossbow.

  • allanm

I'm a crossbow guy too Charles - I started last year and may have overdone it a bit on draw and my strength with fibromyalgia. :-)

I bought an Excalibur Matrix Bulldog 400 - 400 feet per second, 280lb draw. Reduced with a cocking rope/pulleys - but a heavy draw all the same. I really like it, I like the compactness of a compound, but I wanted the simplicity of a recurve. One string I can replace myself, no cables, cams etc.

Practicing, I can cock and shoot that maybe 10 times and I"m done, sweating like a feral hog in Texas in summer and ready to go rest!

  • Michael D. Mitchell

Charles, Thiz isn't a Cross Bow, But I thought i could "Throw it in Here". It is Presumably a Bread Knife...........Also can be Used for Slicing Game, One side iz Completely Flat w/the Handle, the Other side haz a Ridge or Lip, that run'z the Length of the Blade, allowing, ?Whatever iz Sliced?? to Fall Away from the Cutting Edge.  I will Attempt to send a Picture.

Republicans rammed a bill through the House on Wednesday that would make it easier for gun owners to legally carry concealed weapons across state lines,

    http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/politics/ct-gop-gun-...

seems an interesting choice of words

  • Billy Oneale

Well, you can tell the political leanings of the writer. If I remember right, Democrats rammed Obamacare through also. The whole article is dumb. No wonder Chicago has a violence problem. I love the part about people having guns illegally. I don't think they care about laws anyway.

  • Jan Carter

I agree Billy.  I read a couple of these but this one struck me as the dumbest article about a great forward movement

    Charles Sample

You are so right Billy.  Since when did any criminal worry about obeying the law?

  • Clint Thompson

Chicago in 2016 had more shooting incidents than all of Afghanistan. Need anymore be said?

Being a LEO I can tell you, the snowflakes in the USA believe an armed citizen is a dangerous citizen. They fear what they don't understand. With a 5 to 10 minute average response time for law enforcement, the armed citizen is our first line of defense. Pure and simple every since April 19th, 1775.

  • Featured

    Charles Sample

Clint, I wore a badge myself for several years.  From my experience I would say that five minutes is just about the minimum response time.  I recently read that average response time is about 11 minutes.  And of course if that is the average, it can be much longer.  But even in 11 minutes a lot of harm can be done.

  • Michael D. Mitchell

Charles and Clint;  AMEN to That.

NRA Elections: More Important than Ever to Research and Vote

Have you researched and voted?  This is your opportunity to help guide how the NRA goes forward.

  • Featured

    Charles Sample

If you are a gun owner it is important to belong to the NRA.  But I think it is even more important to belong to GOA (Gun Owners of America).  Per their own literature the GOA is the only no compromise gun lobby in Washington.  The anti gun people fear them more than the NRA.  They are very proactive.  They will send you postcards already written and addressed to congressmen and even the president.  All you have to do is sign and stamp them and mail them.  They will even send emails to the same people for you.  You can become a member for as little as $20 a year.

The population of the US in 2016 was 323 million.  In 2013 Pew Research conducted a poll.  In that poll 37% of Americans said they or someone in their household owned a gun.  Just taking 33% or 1/3 of only 300 million, that would make at least 100 million gun owners in this country.  If we could get just 20% or one out of five of them to join GOA, as close as elections are now in this country, we could control every election.  Just think what we could do with a voting block of 20 million voters!  With only five million members, the NRA is considered the strongest lobbying group in Washington.

So if you own a gun or even think you will want to own one someday, please join GOA!

I know by now most of you in this group have heard that Remington filed bankruptcy this week.

Well this article sure has some good news

(Reuters) - U.S. gunmaker Remington Outdoor Co has obtained commitments for nearly $300 million from its existing lenders, including some of the biggest U.S. banks, after new sources of funding dried up in the months leading up to its filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. U.S. banks provide rescue financing for gunmaker Remington

Listen folks, I think very few gun owners really realize how much jeopardy our Second Amendment rights are in right now.  The anti freedom, anti gun socialists are in full bore attack mode.  They realize they have a golden opportunity.  And I believe they will make big gains.  Some of the restrictions I see coming are raising the age to buy a rifle from 18 to 21, limiting magazine capacity to five rounds, requiring a background check for private sales, and anything else they can push through now.  I think they will try to ban AR15's and their clones but I don't think they can get that right now.  But after the next shooting, who knows?  And there will be a next shooting because guns are not the problem.  And we can't depend on Trump and the Republicans because both have shown they will cave.

It has been said that the best defense is a good offense.  People, we gun owners have got to go on offense  I think every gun owner who doesn't belong to one or the other of the NRA or Gun Owners of America (GOA) should be ashamed.  I belong to both.  It only costs $20 dollars a year to join GOA and they take a lot of the work out of writing and emailing congress and the president.

Don't think just because they are not going after your favorite gun now that they won't go after it in the future. The socialist ultimate goal is the elimination of guns in private hands.  They know they can't accomplish that all at once.  They are incrementalists.  They take whatever they can get whenever they can get it.  They are in it for the long haul.  They also never waste a good crisis.  They have no problem with taking a horrific event and using it for political purposes.

I posted something just three posts down but I am going to repeat it here because it is so important

"The population of the US in 2016 was 323 million. With only five million members, the NRA is considered the strongest lobbying group in Washington."
