A Very Nice Pair ....a collaborative of George Wostenholm I*XL out of Sheffield England, with Scrimshaw by Bill Feeney of Bedford Massachusetts, commissioned and marketed as a “Schrade I*XL” Limited Edition by the “Imperial Knife Assoc. Co., Inc” Ellenville, New York.

I am happy to be corrected on any of this ‘info’ by the way I have just picked up various snippets about them from various sources.

Made in 1981 The (4”) Stockman and (3 ¾”) Canoe Pattern Knives have genuine polished white bone scales with the Whaling themed scrimshaw – Bedford was a famous Whaling harbor - all hand done and signed by the artist Bill Feeney and as such each matched pair was slightly different and only 2000 of these sets were made. Mine are numbered 1217.

Unfortunately when I got these the wooden presentation box was so badly damaged in the mail it was beyond saving.

  • Derek Wells

Yep Steve I have seen a photo of the other set of knives which came out around the same time and they were a "small" and a "medium" lock back.

  • Derek Wells

I believe the other set of Scrimshaw Knives were in this sort of pattern

  • Jan Carter

Derek what a shame about the box!  The knives are done very well!

  • Sunil Ram

Nice looking Stockman. How is the fit and finish. The scales look a little gappy and unflush. (may just be the macro image)

  • tim payne

thanks sunil.  good snap on all 5 blades.  for an almost 40 year old knife, I would say it has aged well.

  • James Kevin Herrington

Let's see your most obscure Stockman.
  • James Kevin Herrington

    Case Stockman 2 questions:
    1. Do all medium sized, square bolster Case Stockmans have a poem instead of a spey?

    2. Does Case offer the ability to choose what type of blades are in a Stockman on a special order basis?
  • Rick Hooper

A pen or a punch blade?
  • Sunil Ram

Yesterday I needed a quick sharpening touch up on my Stockman knife while I was using it. So I used the bottom exposed ceramic ring on a coffee mug. Worked well. Just wish I had a Strop with me. I used my jeans to strop the blade. Anyone do this or any other quick on the spot sharpening method?

  • Rick Hooper

If it works use it! I have used various rocks on construction projects with mixed results. Used my jeans too, new Wranglers work best!
  • Jan Carter

I have used the bottom of a cup for touch and then my work boots instead of my jeans.  A trick I learned from Donnie

  • Rick Hooper

Yep, stone washed Levi jeans are too soft for honing, they washed away the abrasion. However for final honing , they make straighten the wire edge.
  • James Cole

I have been sharpening knives on the bottom of china plates for decades.  I strop, very carefully, on the palm of my hand.  Not going to shave with it, but it will be cutting sharp.

  • Rick Hooper

I purchased a Hen & rooster stag handled knife, model 173 DS which needs a shield. Does Bertram supply these? The local knife repairman has tree brand Boker, which fits perfectly. But what would it be, a Hen Roosted?
  • Rick Hooper

Purchased a 1950-60's Big Queen Steel model 49 yesterday. It one of a few large stockman, that has enough blade to multi-task as a hunting and fishing knife.
  • James Kevin Herrington

Rick Hooper, I recently purchased a Queen Model 49 which had been issued to the Canadian military in their paratrooper survival packs. I thought that to be a lithe bizarre. I have a little more info if you want to know.
  • John Bamford

Love to see a photo of that #49 James , is it the standard version like mine ?

  • Rick Hooper

James, I would also, the Queen 49 like the Case 6375 has the heft and sturdiness to complete many tasks!
  • Sunil Ram

Let's see if we can give a little boost to the Stockman Pattern Group. What Stockman have you been carrying lately? Any new acquisitions? Any manufacturers or custom knife makers currently have a fantastic Stockman that you got your eyes on and your wallet filling up for?

If you have any friends out there who are knife nuts like us but are not members of iKC invite them to join our Community of knife enthusiasts and encourage them to join this group, other groups, and perhaps even create a group here that may not already cover their interests and passions.

  • Sunil Ram

Don't forget that this group is also for Sowbelly knives, basically a sagging frame of a Stockman.

I used to carry and still like the Stockman pattern. I have only a few in my collection, but I really like them all. Here are a few of mine.

  • Calvin Pruett

Stockman and cattle knives of yore are some of my favorite knives. I just signed up today and am learning how to navigate these unfamiliar waters; I thought I would post an image of a Challenge stockman.

  • Billy Oneale

Nice Cattleman, Calvin. I love looking at the older knives.most usually have a story to them.

    Great lookin' Stockman guys!

I forgot about this group! Where's the embarrassed smilie? LOL!

After using knives for most of my life and collecting for over 40 years, bouncing around the different patterns from time to time and here and there, I have finally come to the conclusion that the Stockman is my favorite pattern.

And since I've been collecting Case exclusively for several years now, my main patterns are the 33 Small Stockman, 032 Medium Stockman, and the 75 Large Stockman. I collect them, and use them.

My main EDC is the first picture, and I switch off with an 032 of which I have three different ones, the one in the picture is one..........

    Stag

    Dark Molasses Heritage Jig

  • Sunil Ram

Awesome post Craig Henry. Those are definitely some great looking pocketknives. Nice photography too. Thanks for posting.

    Thanks Sunil!

  • Brian H Bentley

I am super pleased with my latest addition to my Stockman collection. The more I stare at and handle my new Case 6375 CV the more I love it.

  • Sunil Ram

Nice Case Stockman, Brian H Bentley. What is that handle color called?

  • Brian H Bentley

It is called Amber Bone. The pits are a dark brown but the lighter areas are somewhat orange.
