Arguably, the easiest & most frequently used method for dating cutlery. Do you have a unique/rare stamping ?? Care to share a pic & a bit of history ?? Just as important ... a stamping that's just a little (or, a lot) suspect.
I love this knife. I got it about a month ago. It was at an antique store listed as a letter opener. It has history and is odd. Kissing Crane logo with a Sheffield England make. I think it is from the 1840's -1860's and was a lady of the night knife.
