Dale, congrat's on the new pup! He will make you a great friend and the loss of one eye won't stop that.

    Thanks all !!

The little guy’s fitting in. Our other two didn’t know what to think @ first. Luckily, older dogs have an innate deference for puppies. They’ve finally started playing together .. sorta .. last night & it’s improving today.

This Puggle hybrid / crossbreed is something else. i.e. the beagle yelp delivered in an adolescent pitch … … … well, we’re a little short on sleep around here @ the moment.  And 9~10 wks old my butt. He try’s to nurse on Daisy .. he get’s his nose in my beard & starts rooting around for a nipple. He eats dry food, but .. I give him a 1/2 cup cream @ night .. he inhales it & then passes out for ~ 45 min.  I’m thinking a bit younger than 9~10 wks.

He does NOT act or appear to be in physical pain !!! He’s still struggling w/ the loss of his left eye .. but there’s improvement on a daily basis. Initially .. my or Abby’s voice, one of the other dogs, any loud sound would cause him to turn to the left .. and sort of circle to the left in an attempt to locate the source. My theory is .. his lil brain was still used to a full view screen .. and w/ half of it suddenly shut off .. he’s just naturally attempting to see what he can no longer. That response is improving .. if the source of the noise is on his right side w/i his view .. he’s no longer instantly turning to the left.

The Elizabethan collar also restricts his hearing .. especially w/ sounds from behind .. further adding to his disorientation & confusion. This is luckily a temporary thing .. it and the stitches are gone on Friday.

We had some 60 deg weather here today. All three of the dogs were interacting in the backyard. Briar, the feist/rat terrier, is still a bit aloof. He’s becoming more receptive though. Today .. outside anyway .. it was more a case of an older brother w/ a much younger brother. Briar would escape to a distant part of the yard .. till the lil guy would locate him again .. after which Jack would go over & mimic Briar .. laying down next to him in the same position. To which Briar was “Dude, somebody might see us together. Now go, go, somewhere, anywhere.” It was funny !!!

I realize that, to a breeder, a physically defective dog is damaged goods & therefore worthless .. or worse yet .. an increased & ongoing cost. BUT, what are they breeding these dogs for ??? Pets / companions .. right !?!? Well .. to my way of thinking .. the loss of an eye didn’t diminish any of that .. soooo WTF. That’s my rant for the day !!!

    He’s young, he’s continually improving/adapting, & he seems happy .. I’ll keep ya posted !!!

  • Jan Carter

    Dale,

Glad to know he is getting accepted and feels at home so soon.  Has he found a nipple in that heard yet?

  • In Memoriam

    D ale

Jan .. while he's not experienced success .. that hasn't daunted his youthful enthusiasm .. ahhh, to be young again !!!

The dreaded cone came off yesterday. Either the stitches had came out on there own ..or.. with the help of Daisy's licking.  No matter, the vet said to still take him in tomorrow, but we could leave the collar off provided he didn’t open any wounds up. The only thing it’s done so far is make him more mobile.

He’s fitting in and things are finding a happy medium around here. The warmer weather helps .. an hour outside w/ his older siblings just knocks him out !!

  • Jan Carter

    Dale,

By now Jack has lost the cone/stiches and I assume is feeling more normal.  Send us some more pics when you can.  I love that everything is starting to settle in and he is enjoying some outdoor time with the older boys

Jack's physically healed @ this point. He is still learning to compensate for the loss of the eye though.

He's much better when moving @ a normal pace. However, when playing enthusiastically w/ Briar .. he will occasionally run full tilt into .... table leg/sofa/chair .... bounce off & keep right on going !!!!

Things are settling in alright. Daisy's maternal instinct has surfaced. Briar's got himself a little brother that’s easy to set up, takes the blame, wrestles back, & has a blind side. Jack's ALMOST sleeping through the night.

    Things are good here !!!!!!!

    Briar needed a little  one-on-one

He's no longer the "lil guy" .. 'n it's taken some adjustment.

  • Jan Carter

Jack is looking good and bouncing off everything in sight is what all puppies do so he is on track LOL.  Briar looks content to me

  • Jan Carter

I LOVE the idea of the IKC animals.  Pat's newest are sure cute young ladies

  • Jan Carter

I went fishing last friday and a friend of mine and his wife were out fishing also and they had their little dog with them in the boat fishing with them. I thought that there would be alot of nice photo's of the dog while fishing for our "Fishing Photo Contest". Just think of the posibilities.

  • Bill Fletcher

Pat, I'm very sorry to hear about Jackson.  I'm sure the farm is a lot quieter today than he would like.

    Bear at 7 months

  • Bill Fletcher

Herb, that is a nice looking pup!!!

  • Herb Hoover

Bill he is a big strong puppy but he gets his feelings hurt if I correct him.

  • Bill Fletcher

Looks like Bear has a great place to stretch his legs and play.

  • Jan Carter

LOL, Case is the same way.  Hangs his head, gets in his chair and has that sad look on his face if you correct him on something

  • Herb Hoover

Bear has 1/2 acre back yard fenced for his play area.  He's bent on digging holes in that nice bermuda but heck there only puppys once.  When I bought the house the back yard was woods. I cut 80 pines down, stumps ground, land bulldozed. planted bermuda and had it fenced just for my puppers.

Pat, they sure do look like happy dogs.

Saddest thing Iv seen in a while . I stoped to get gas after work and a 14 year old boy was carrying his young pup accross the parking lot and layed him down by the store. We tryed to revive the pup but he was already dead from heat exhaustion. Very heart breaking. Please dont walk your dogs in this extreme heat and make sure theyb have plenty of water. NEVER NEVER leave them in your vehicle even with the windows down. The pup that died today wasent even a year old. Herb

  • Jan Carter

    Herb,

Thanks for trying to revive the little guy.  I cant even image how heartbreaking that was for you to witness and the young man

I subscribe to this little site for collectors....and get their newsletter...always some humor section...tia.com

this is appropriate for this group.....OMG...I thought I would just bust after reading it......

My father was hungry and opened the fridge to see what was left over.
Overjoyed, he found a dish of cold meatloaf and "woofed" it down.
When he saw my mother later, he complimented on how good her meatloaf was.
    "Meatloaf?"
    "Yes! In the blue bowl."
    "That was the dog food!"
It must run in the family, since I used to share Milk Bones with our Airedale....

Steve, that poor pup and kid been on my mind this evening. Dogs dont sweat so the only way to get cool is drinking water or bathing them in cool water. They become dehydrated quickly in the hot sun and without water it's a death sentence. The little boy didn't know how bad the pup was dehydrated until the pup hit the ground dead.  We tryed CPR, bags of ice and water to no avail. Once the heart stops it's over. People, the animals have to have water ALL the time, especially on hikes or jogging or high heat like today. It was 104* today and this happened in town with water ever where but it was too late for this beautiful 8 month old German Shepard. Yep it broke my heart.

  • Herb Hoover

Bless you Steve for being a good animal owner. Something as simple as water would save a lot of needless deaths. People need to fill up large buckets of water for their pets so they dont run out in this heat.

I use small wash tubs and large bowls around the place for the dogs to lay in and cool off. In my woods, when dry, this time of year, I put out plastic oil change tubs with water for the dogs and wild annimals to drink from when in the woods. You almost can't have enough little oasis of water for them. I have seven dogs and theres always one cooling off.

I have an all white husky and I live in Phoenix, Arizona where temps can reach into the 110's all summer long. I aways make sure my dogs have access to plenty of water and shade. I never shave my husky as fur is designed to trap mositure against their skin to help keep them cool. But I do make sure his winter undercoat is brushed out.

  • Jan Carter

Casey Dog is a house dog but he has a very large water bowl and when we travel we also have water bowls for him and he never stays in the vehicle without us and the a/c.

Thanks Miss Jan, about that notice, someones dog died the other day from being left in a hot car. Another cheap and great little cooler is a childers plastic swim pool. I sometime freeze a empty milk jug, with water and make a block of ice, then put it in the pool.

  • Jan Carter

Robert, I like the idea of the frozen milk jug in the pool.  Great idea for helping them keep the body temp down in this heat.

Anyone do anything special to keep the dogs from being so anxious about fireworks?  I just spend the evening with 100lbs of lab in my lap

  • stephen tungate

you can't get harley off the a/c vent he will sleep on that thing all night sometimes i think i see ice coming off he's nose.i don't know how he does it....
