Carbon Steel Group

This group if dedicated for the knife users/collectors that prefer Carbon Steel to the newer "Super Steels" and Stainless Steels that are used more and more these days-CV, 1095, or any other.

  • Nick Hansen

Could be, but I plan on taking a picture of a Stockman that I have that has the most patina on it. It's only been a carry for about 4 months, but used a lot when I eat, so maybe it'll do the group justice.

Either that, or take a picture of the "CV" stamp on one of my case knives. I only have one knife that's made with 1095, but its more tactical than I want to showcase.

If you have any ideas for a group picture, please let me know. I'm pretty limited, but nevertheless, I have become quite the fan of carbon steels as of late.

Nick, I have a large custom  15" knife with full patina. It has desert iron wood handles. I can send you a picture if you would like me to....Rob
  • Nick Hansen

That sounds great. Why don't you send me the picture and I'll get it right up. Scott contacted me and he would like to see me get an ID picture up as soon as possible.

I can see why a group with no picture would not be very presentable.

If you need any of my info, contact me again.

I like saw blade steel the best. Mainly because it is easy to find and use, and it makes a good blade. I have found saw blades up to 52 inches for trade of a knife. I can get a lot of bowies out of one blade. Also at the saw mills around here, I can get band saw blades for free. I also use the saw blad steel in my damascus steel along with spring steel and 205 nickel. You can't beat free for cheep!

  • Bill Harvey

Howdy boys.  Your non-knife but wood working GOB here.  Have to agree w/ Michael Bolen.  I've made some fine knives from an old saw blades and a plasma arc cutter.  They also make some fine scrapers.  (Scrapers are rectangular pieces of spring (whaz 'spring steel' anyway?)  BUT my favorite knife-making steel is the steel trapping they use to bundle 2x4's together.  Made a bunch of scribes out'a some thinnish strapping and a killer fillet knife out'a some bigger stuff.  ANd a GOB Michale sez -you can't beat free for cheep.
  • Nick Hansen

So far this group seems to be growing fairly quickly. Glad to see that.

Looks like we've got some pretty respectable members here already, too.

Anyone here, I want to invite you to feel free to start a discussion. I know that a lot of people are into carbon steels. So there has to be some questions that people have about different metals maybe vs others. But there are many topics to discuss, many photos to share, and a lot of other things to talk about.

Feel free to post your knives and the like.

I would love to start a whole bunch of conversations here. But my experience is limited-which is why I started this group...

Anything that is relevant is okay here, so make this group yours.

I'll have to dig up some pics too .. I've some 100 yr old carbon steel that'll put todays cryo treated AUS8 to shame .. 'n will even hold it's own against some of Brownings 440C they were bringing in out of Japan in the mid 70's. Some old Waterville Cutlery Company that is simply amazing. 'n then last summer .. I dulled a file on an old Marble's Axe head. Both cases .. high carbon steel .. 'n damn tough !!!!

    To Robert Burris,

Laissez les  bons temps rouler. Your son is a very lucky man to have a father like you in his life.

  • Michael Kelley Sr.

Thanks for the e-vite James, and yes I do prefer carbon steel but I guess  I prefer older stuff as a whole to newfangled high tech stuff. Will get pics of some carbon cutlery later, perhaps when the earth stops turning so darn fast. The days just seem to go by faster and faster as time goes by.

    Mike.

  • Bob Robinson

Thanks for the invite, I'll post a few pics when I get the time. I like the carbon steels best, they have the 'look' that makes a knife a cherished item. Sort of like the wrinkles of life. Also gives me the excuse to get them out to care for them more often.
  • Jim Thompson

James, thanks for the invite to this group. If one looks at my pix you will see several "Carbon Steel" knives as well as others. I like the old ones but I also have some specific patterns I selectively collect and there are several of these that are other material alloys because that is the only way they are offered.

  • Carl Newton

James, thanks for the invite, I guess carbon steel is what started it all. I have an old one or two, I'll take a pic and post it.

I thought I would let those that are unfamiliar with carbon steel knives see that you don't have to let them "turn" or develop a patina, that if you wish, you can keep them shiny as any stainless steel. The two knives in the picture are several years old, I use them five days a week, five months out the year, to clean a lot of big and small game animals and with a little extra trouble, I keep them shiny as a new nickle. I use a metal polish once in a while after heavy use and a metal protectant frequently and I have no trouble keeping them in this condition. If anyone wants to know the brands I use, just let me know.

Hey, guys and gals, please post some of them Carbon Steel Knives.
  • Jan Carter

so tell me ya'll.  What was your fist carbom steel and what made you just love it??
  • Jan Carter

The last time I used my fav Carbon steel was to open a special package on Sunday.  When is the last time you used yours?

  • In Memoriam

    Robert Burris

My first love in carbon steel was two knives. The first was an old Green River hunter and the second was a canoe with dark red jigged bone handles and the large blade was a spear point and the small one was a clip point. I have no idea what brand it was because of the patina and my memory. I loved those two knives. The game and fish that they went through, my, my, such old memories.
  • Jan Carter

Don....Stephen...What were your first "loves" and why?

Wow, awfully quiet in here lately

I'd like to see who has the knife with the best patina. If you guys and gals have some carbon steel knives with a great patina, don't be shy, post em, let us see a picture.

Anybody know the name of the carbon steel that Puma used back in the 1960's or 70's?

  • Jan Carter

Well Robert I found a chart but we will have to get Halicon or someone to tell me what it means

Thanks Miss Jan but thats the stainless steels that Puma uses. I want to know what carbon steel they used on their knives back in the 1970's.

I have a question for our Carbon Steel Group members. We need to get alot more partiscipation in this group. If you carbon steel guys and gals are afraid of the Stainless groups, please let me know. My question is "What kind of steel was James Bowie's knife, stainless or Carbon?
