i think they do - i sent in an order over the week-in & i think I ordered a couple to engrave for stock - I'll take a pix when they get here - should be Thurs or Fri - tom
Alright, I am coming out of the closet. I probably have around 200 Rough Riders. They were one of the imports that got me started. Good knifes for a good price and they will give you good service. Lots and lots of patterns. They are one of the few brands that you can find sunfish, elephant toenails and leg patterns in.My wife has me buy her every ladyleg I come across. Smoothbone and Stag are my favotite handle materials in the Rough Rider line.
Hey RR's are pretty nice and offer a beginner a way into collecting some well made and sometimes very pleasing knifes in many styles, without braking the bank.
Steve, I Know that Rough Rider has several styles of Fixed Blades. Only one that I have is the B&T in the first Stag series. Seems that the Fixed Blades, in any handle material, are almost always the first to sell out. That should tell SMKW something...
This one was under $20.00. And it is real stag too. (Stag on the second series was better though, but no fixed blade.)
SMKW lists over 20 Rough Rider Fixed Blades, from a Small Hunter for $7.00 (RR070) to a Rough Rider Presentation Hunter for $35.00 (RR1097). Bunch more in between too.
Go to the SMKW website and type in Rough Rider Fixed Blade, ENJOY.
China keeps the value of its currency low so it can sell its products all over the world at a lower price than most contries. I feel its OK to buy knives from other countries but we must continue to support our USA knife makers.
Well let me tell you - the "closet" is stuffed with all kinds of members hiding their little secret. But I am hear to join the ranks and officially say "R.R. knives are the best deal out there and FUN to collect". Nothing makes me question what I am doing more than paying a lot of hard earned dough on an expensive knife. I mean they are just that - "knives" right they are suppose to be fun to collect. Come on the rest of you - we know your in there - kick that door open and expose yourselves.
Our membership went flat - Only 14 members - I haven't had time to post much - been busy in the shop - My knife business is about as flat as this forum has been the past few days - but I'm still getting customers knives to engrave, motorcycle parts & I have a Corvette Project I'm working on for this years car shows.
This "Gas" thing sure slowed things up - I got Fed-EX in today - he said his loads have really gone up since the gas went up - guess more folks are buying on line & driving less.
I got an order of Rough Riders in - I ordered a fixed blade but didn't pay much attention when I ordered it - it's a little bird knife - Looks nice - I need some larger stick knives to scratch up - Whats going on with you guys - tom
Yeah - Thats what I say - I engraved a few new ones - Have some on order - I one guy buy everyone of my engraved one I had - Over all business is very slow - tom
RR is what I buy for my son. He really likes then and doesnt feel too bad if he tips a blade or loses one. There is nothing wrong with them. The materials are a good grade
JJ, nice modification on that whittler. Jan, at least if you only spend 9 or 10 dollars on a Rough Rider and it gets broke or lost it's not something that will be hard to replace unless you have it modified like JJ. I have a bunch in knife rolls that I started out collecting because of the quality and what you pay. There are lots of styles and variations.
Well I lost a RR Congress whittler and circled the neighborhood for 45 minutes looking for it. They may be inexpensive but I really like them and do feel bad when one gets lost or damaged. Only difference is I can replace it easier (Uusally) than I can more expensive knives. Still, I don'tt hink I'm going to be playing mumblery-peg with my Moonshiner Sowbelly or fileting a fish with my Stroke of Luck of Toothpick.
Most all knives are clones anymore - They had a big pissen match on a sling shot forum I visit - one maker was copying another maker - I explained to the guys that there was only so much you can do with a "Y" or a fork - - I know when I was hand making knives I cloned all the old patterns - guess why i'm not rich - tom
I think the Remingtons is somewhat different with it's swedge design but there is little doubt that the Colt and RR Moose are copies of the Remington and the RR and the Colt, both Trademarks of SMKW are clones. I said the same about the RR and Marbles 5 inch toothpicks. Only real difference is the furniture (Scales, bolsters, etc.) and the price tag. Mind you I'm a BIG fan of RR and I would like a few of their knives to be unique to the line.
I haven't really looked at the Blue Moon series closely yet. Just glancing at it, I think I like the color. The Chinese made Remington's, Colt and Rough Rider are all made in the same factory, and as Toby said they are all SMKW trademarks. Well at least the Colt and Rough Rider are. I'm not sure about SMKW having the Remington rights. I think some of the Remington's are SFO's for SMKW. I would like to know for sure about Remington as I collect Remington, especially bullet knives and USA made .
There are two definition of a blue moon. The most common today has a blue moon is the second full moon in the same month. Next one is August 31, 2112.
Or if you go by an older definition it is the fourth full moon of a season (summer, Spring, winter or fall) Going by that defintion, you'll be waiting until August 12, 2013.
Either way, "once in a blue moon" means not very often or rare
I like the moonshiner series better as well, including the blade etch. I might get the the blue moon canoe, but you are correct, a blue moon is full, not crescent. And that etch remind me a lot of SKG DreamWorks pictures.
I didn't know if I would really like the Stroke of Luck series, so I bought the whittler to check it out. I think I will have to get the rest of the series. It really was nicer than I expected. Iv'e been trying to stick mainly with Made in USA lately. Here is a picture.
The etching on the blade reminds me of Fighting Rooster - The cast bolters are what they are - I assume they are cast which i would prefer to have the clean - cast bolsters look like - well cast bosters -
I currently own two Stroke of Luck knives, the 5 inch toothpick and 3 5/8 standard canoe. Only problem with the Canoe is the green bone is varies in shade from obverse to reverse side. According to the fine folks at SMKW, the bolsters are patterned after some antique British Bolsters in their National Knife museum I'm planning on picking up the whittler despite the lack of a coping blade, the large stockman and maybe the locking canoe.
I like the color of the scales. The casting of the bolsters aside, I appreciate that they have taken a pattern from a knife in the musuem. It is nice when the new incorporates the older knives. Let us see them togeather as the collection grows please

I realize thar RR wanted to use a shield that they already had, but isn't a "Blue Moon" a full moon?
Just sayin...

Maybe so, but it still referrs to a full moon. I liked the shield better on the "Moonshine" series.
