The RR Boxcar Whittler is the first of this pattern that i have seen also. It is a verywell built knife and should hold up under extreme use. it caught my eye because i have not ever seen or heard of this pattern.the dealer that i buy my knives from just got it in and wanted tom see how it sold. Did not last very long as i bought it!

I'd like to know if it's a pattern that Ka-Bar came up with on their own several years ago, or there's more history to the pattern. oh well.....

You made a good choice Robert! I think it looks sharp in the black smooth bone!

  • Billy Oneale

I finally put some RR in a display case. Here is a pic of one of them.

  • J.J. Smith III

The Boxcar whittler is nice.  Not good for whittlin my peach pits, but I like it.

  • Tobias Gibson

Very nice collection Billy.  I've got a RR drawer or in a chest of drawers.   I really need to get some more pics taken and finish up that review of the Bartenders.

As far as the Boxcar Whittler, it is on my purchase list but my money tree was hit by the bill blight so I'll need to wait for it to recover.

    Nice Billy!!

Money? What money? I sit on the corner at night playing spoons while my wife and dog do a jig for pocket change.

Thanks Billy, that really shows them off.

I'm so broke that I can't even pay attention.

Ok, am I just taking notice of the "Black Pearl Handle Nickel Silver Spacer" series, or are they all new? I wouldn't think so by the stock numbers; RR228, RR230, RR231, RR232, RR235, but you never know.

I would have bet money (that I don't have) that I never saw them before. Maybe they just got a whole new restock??

    And announcing (drum roll please);

    Siagon Sidekick 2

Looks like something I need for those times when my wife comes into the den mad at me so I can make an escape out the house front wall!

  • Tobias Gibson

I ordered it last night.  I couldn't pass it up.  I've already got a wood splitter from the local hardware store but let's face it.   that thing is a tomahawk and it ain't designed to cut wood!

  • Tobias Gibson

Black pearl has been around for a while.  I've only got one item in it and Tony and Steve from Knives Live is doing a damn good job at getting me to buy more pearl.  Problem is, I don't really care for pearl, which is explains why I haven't bought a lot.  I keep thinking I should buy at least one more black pearl knife.   The folks on the knives live say it is going away and not coming back because they can't make it at the price they're selling it for.

I guess I better get some of those I listed below. They be pretty....and very affordable.

I know the Siagon Sidekick 2 is for....uh.....chopping something other than wood, but it looks like a good general purpose chopping tool in a pinch around the house! LOL!

  • Tobias Gibson

    Very Nice, Craig.

I've got the baby Sunfish, large Sunfish and Elephant Toenail in the white smooth bone (WSB).  These are some of the earlier knives.  The small pen blade is lacking some snap but all in all, very nice.  the two sunfish have the "Always Ready" blade etch. I'm making an effort to collect all of the WSB I can from RR.  And for the patterns RR doesn't have, I'm turning to other makers.  Still waiting for a five inch toothpick in  WSB by RR.  I think I'm going to need to start a petition!

  • Billy Oneale

Nice looking sunfish, Craig. I really like the tobacco bone. Great looking picture.

  • Billy Oneale

Toby, I have the large WSB toenail also. I've been trying to decide what I want to get scrimshawed on it. Nice size for almost any picture to be put on it. All 3 of yours look really good together.

  • Tobias Gibson

Craig, Still after the 5 inch grand-daddy.  I'll get around to it.   You made me check my sunfish/toenails. It is just the large sunfish (RR120)  The other two (RR 116 and RR 139) are fine.  RR 120 just has issues walking and talking  The stay and play are exceptional.  This is one of the very early production models and I bought it as "new old stock" so that could explain some of the problems.  May have been stored improperly.  Either that or it is just a QC issue with some of the older, first run RRs.

Can you hear that? It's calling to you!

  • Tobias Gibson

As I mentioned, some aren't RR.   They don't make Navajas or Bartenders in the WSB.   Four are U.S. Classics. (Whittler, small barlow, bartender and sleeveboard 1/2 whittler with a wharncliffe.)

The other knife with the corkscrew is a really interesting knife I believe is for cigar smokers.  Has a small pin and a pairs of scissors.  Also not a RR.  Someone gave me a Frost Trapper.  Its there until I get around buying the RR. (The Frost ain't too bad however, especially for free!) The little hawkbill was a place holder made by Rite Edge until RR came out with a real Hawk!

The rest are  440 tested razor sharp Rough Riders. (14 out of 22)

  • Alexander Noot

I got my first lemon today.

Bought a Stockman Stoneworx with Abalone and synthstone inlays. The blades rub terribly, even to the point where the smaller blades won't close without help (the spey blade) and the sheepsfoot won't close without first opening the spey blade and then closing the sheepsfoot first.

I'm already communicating with the seller about a replacement/refund. This knife should never have left the factory like this, and after they'd taken pictures for e-bay they should've known it wasn't fit to be sold.'

    Look at this:

  • In Memoriam

    Robert Burris

Those blades do have bad problems, the handles are prety though. Nice pattern. Good luck on a refund.

  • Tobias Gibson

Did you get them form SMKW.  They'll take care of you right away.  If not, if the reseller is a jerk give them a call anyway.  Should be worth a try and getting a replacement.

To be fair, I had blades on Case knife that were just as bad that i got through amazon.  The Case factory,  had me mail it to them and tey fixed it right up.  I'm pretty sure SMKW does the same thing for their RR line, so long as it isn't obvious abuse on the owners part that led to the issue.

I also know the KYknives guy  on ebay (zix) will refund and replace without question.

  • Alexander Noot

The dealer isn't making a big fuss over it it seems. He's offered me an exchange when he gets new stock in. But I think I might get a refund instead.

  • Alexander Noot

On that failed Stockman I got. The seller is sending me another one when he gets new ones in. it'll be a week or two but he'll send it to me free of charge and won't make me send back the old one. Who knows, maybe with a bit of work I can repair that crooked blade.

New - "Vietnam Brotherhood" Trapper RR1226

  • Billy Oneale

I like the Vietnam Brotherhood and the Lime Green knives. That green really stands out.

  • Featured

    Craig Henry

I wish they did a Trapper in the lime green. And I wish they did that "rough" jigged bone in more patterns.

  • Tobias Gibson

I like the Brotherhood Trapper.  I Might just have to get it even though I don't as a rule collect Trappers.  I also like the "bomb" shield they are using.

Now if they can just release some more 5 inch toothpicks, a new marlin spike knife and  maybe a cattleman's knife (a stockman with a punch blade instead of spay blade)

Hope everyone here on the RR forum had a good thanksgiving.

How about a set of RR kitchen knives. Then you can carve your christmas turkey or ham!

  • Jan Carter

That skinner set would make a nice kitchen set.  I am surprised they have not come out with one for christmas

  • Tobias Gibson

Word up to anyone selling on eBay at the moment.  If you're selling the Saigon Sidekick and you're using my image, I suggest you contact me back-channel and ask "pretty please, can I use it?"  I'm about to  fax off a copyright infringement form to eBay and shut your auction down.   Honestly, I'm a nice guy but I've had to jump through hundreds of hoops to put images on my different website the right way and I like people to ask permission to use my stuff.

  • Tobias Gibson

I have to admit I'm an eBay Junkie.  Bu tI have found that when it comes to higher dollar items (by that I mean over $20 [twenty])  I rely on about six or seven different sellers.  I'm very Leary of the unknown sellers.  They need to be at !00%    with lots of sells before I will buy.

Of course I'll take a chance at the Under $10 (including shipping)  but even then I want a %100 satisfaction rating or over 98% if the the person has made thousands of sales.

I always compare prices to Amazon, SMKW, and a few other knife sites.  As for Rough Riders, there are two sellers I use on eBay when I can't find the item at SMKW.

Someone was asking about whether RR made a Moose pattern? Well they do! RR1193 in the "Once in a Blue Moon" series.

  • Tobias Gibson

Ebay got back to me about the person using my pictures for their bid.  I hope no one here was bidding.

    Ebay said:

"We are pleased to inform you that the following listing(s) you reported have been removed from eBay in response to the Notice of Claimed Infringement you recently sent"

Now maybe it seems like I was a jerk, but I contacted the seller two days before reporting the problem to eBay.  Had he got back to me with a sincere apology and/or I promise not to do it again. things would've been different.  As it is, he ignored me.

Last I saw the bid was over $22 including the postage.  You can get it for that with a guarantee from SMKW these days considering all the free shipping deals.

  • Tobias Gibson

About the imitation Abalone -- I've got the 3 inch toothpick and the Butterbean (mini canoe).  They're purty little things.  Nice little Sunday knives.

I also like old yeller......I need more.......

  • Tobias Gibson

I've got three old yellers.  While all are quite good, I don't really collect them.  I grabbed the Gent's whittler, because I got it on $3 bid and free shipping.  The locking canittler and the rigger were bought because I collect the pattern.  I suspect I will wind up with more old yellers despite not buying that handle material out right.

  • Billy Oneale

Well, I fell off the wagon and ended up buying 6 rough riders over the last weekend. Pictures to follow when I get them. I think I bought 4 from SMKW and a couple from Big Mike.

  • robert benton

Well the Rough Rider bug bit again after reading tobias review on the paratrooper bowie i ordered it and was not dissapointed.I was told that it was made in El salvador by the same company that makes Condor knives. It will make a good utility /Camp knife,Sharpened up nice. Also ordered a RR muskrat in the Moonshiner series.Anyone have one of these?
