Hey Toby, I'm the same way, the only China made knives I have are Rough Riders. Although, I am looking hard at Mr. AG,'s knives from that country, very well done.

Well, I was trying to control my spending this time around............LOL!

  • Jan Carter

Just looking at SMKW.  Some tobacco bones and smooth white bones on sale right now!

  • J.J. Smith III

Billy,  I'll probably never see the knives that I got for the girls again, to take pics of them, but I'll try.  Looking at the pics at SMKW, my locking canoe (Item # RR1078)  is pretty similar to the pic, with the irregular dye.  I'll post a pic when we get some sun.  About finished smoothing out the scales on the whittlin buddy.  Still trying to decide if I want to modify the sheeps-foot or not.

  • Jan Carter

JJ, would love to see that whittlin buddy with smooth handles.  I can see that knife being very user friendly with peach pits

  • J.J. Smith III

Not really smooth, Jan, just smoothed a bit and rounded the edges of the scales (kinda like the CASE Pocket Worn knives).  Here it is, after I finished sanding the scales.  I also took some of the sharp edges and corners off of the bolsters.

Compare it to my other one.  See also the modification to the sheeps foot?

  • J.J. Smith III

Ok, Billy,  I managed to get the knives from the girls for a photo shoot.

    Here's my wife's "leg"...

    Kaylin's toothpick...

    and Karlee's toothpick...

and finally my locking canoe.  (love the imperfect dye job here.)...

Hey, I love that Canoe Whittler, I like those scales too, JJ.

  • Jan Carter

    JJ,

I like all the girls knives too.  On yours, can we now call it a wharnie foot?

  • Billy Oneale

Those are all nice J.J. I really like the way the bone looks on that Whittler.

I like that Midnight Swirl Toothpick.

  • J.J. Smith III

Billy,  the bone was supposed to look like the Ladies Leg.  Splotchy dye job gives it some character.

    Robert Burris

I like the splotchy dye job too, JJ. Where did you find the spelling on a word like "Splotchy"? You blew me away with that one..lol

  • J.J. Smith III

It's a rural SC word, common spelling. Lol.

I really like my RR mods, Ivars, but I'd never pay $50.00 for one.

I've been eyeing the lockback sowbelly as a mod.  Looks like the person that reshaped both  blades was more concerned with keeping the nail pull.  Usually, you don't even need a nail pull, especially on lockbacks.

Do your own mods, Ivars.  You'll be better satisfied with the results.

(This is about my favorite RR mod.)

  • J.J. Smith III

Ivars, If you feel that you do need a nail pull, don't worry about trying to keep the factory one, Cut your own with a cutting wheel or an abrasive stone.  You just need to have enough gripping area to be able to open the blade.  Doesn't have to look pretty, you're modifying it to be used.

One I did from a Steel Warrior.

  • J.J. Smith III

Thanks Ivars. The tools that I use cost only about $25.00. I do have a dremel, but I generally use a $20.00 rotary tool. The cut off wheels are dimond coated, come in a pack of 5, with the holder, and run $5.00. If you have a belt sander, it may be a better choice than a grinder for shaping your blades.
  • robert benton

Hello all,got my first RR moose in brown jigged bone, very well made solid knife, love the swedge on the main blade.

  • In Memoriam

    Robert Burris

I agree with you Ivars, I love a swedge on a blade. There's too many knife companies that make a great handle on a knife but with a plane jane blade. Look at alot of the vintage knives, they had swedges. Sorry to hear about the cost of a belt sander. Mine cost about 80 USA dollars, not the best but a good little sander for the price.

  • Tobias Gibson

I'm not sur eI want a swedge on every blade.  While it is appealing, if it were on all RR we'd probably be drooling over the plain style  blade if they  all the swedge.  Plus, I don't know if I would want a sheepfoot or coping blade with the swedge.

I agree Robert. I LOVE the look of the old "vintage" knives! Waaay back when I used to do rehandling and repairs, I used a grinder that attached to a heavy duty drill!!! It worked great! Guys used to ask me if I had a grinder that cost hundreds of dollars!

  • Tobias Gibson

New Rough Riders are in, aside from a pair of nail clippers, I'm not aware of a new pattern.

I have my fingers crossed, but so far all I've seen is  the nail clippers and  the Moby Dick clasp knife.  It is laser scrimshawed with a whaling scene on it.

While it looks nice,  I'm really hoping for new scout knives or five inch toothpicks. I'm very much assuming I'll be disappointed.  I also seriously doubt a new RR marlin spike will surface.

I've been on a serious knife buying slump this summer and Rough Rider isn't helping me one Iota.  I need more than a Toad Sticker and nail clippers.  (sigh)

  • J.J. Smith III

    Toby,

    I feel your pain...

  • Jan Carter

very disappointing Tobias.  Maybe something special will jump out at you.  No new patterns or handle materials either?

  • robert benton

New RR pattern now available at SMKW -single blade liner lock trapper-brown or red jigged bone scales, yellow composition also available.two ordered.looks similar to the boker version

  • Tobias Gibson

Thanks Robert!  They've been advertising them for over a month!  About time they had them for sale.

  • robert benton

You are welcome tobias, i called my favorite dealer after i saw that SMKW finally had them available, he told me that he had some coming and would be in by friday. i had him hold out two for me. i will post again when i get them, i have been waiting for these knives to finally come out.

  • robert benton

Hell everyone well i got the RR linerlock trappers. 1 in red jigged bone 1 in yellow comp. the design is almost identical to a boker trapperliner. the blade is identical, the thumbstud is steel and not plastic like the boker, the pivot washers are steel, the bokers are nylon. i really like the knife the only thing that i can find that i do not like is the cut out in the handle is not deep enough which makes opening a little difficult. fit and finish is good as usual with RR Brand. i reccomennd getting one. Robert

  • Tobias Gibson

After over a year of waiting, I've decdide I've waited long enough. I'm planning on putting the scales I want, on the Rough Rider pattern I want.   But I've never done this.  Can anyone give me advice on how hard it is to remove the scales on a Rough rider knife?  I plan to do this for their scout knives and their large toothpicks.  I know there are pins that just hold the scales on and then a pin that is also there for the back spring.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

  • robert benton

Saw it on RR,s FB page they are coming out with some carbon steel knives, it,s about time!

  • Jan Carter

I wonder if they are thinking of upscaling a portion of the line.  1095 would be nice.  I would take another look at some of those whittlers they have

  • Billy Oneale

    I think it's great.
  • Jan Carter

I can only think that they would start with a portion of the line.  But here is a thought.  what about a new line.....

  • Jan Carter

They could call it the Roosevelt line

  • Tobias Gibson

Hopefully they'll be making th eline in the US or El Salvador because if it is coming out of Pakistan. I'm going to be very reluctant to buy it.  The current political situation is really infuriating me.

How about the "San Juan Hill" series or collection?

I'm an old fart so I get ticked off easy. I find myself getting more ticked off with stuff in the world everyday. Maybe we should have a "Ticked Off" group?

  • Tobias Gibson

The knives from Pakistan currently have two strikes against them.  The overall quality is lacking and seems to be getting worse.  And then there is the lack of support they are giving us in our war on terror. Strike 3 is just around the corner. I'd really hate to see the RR carbon being made there.  China is also getting on my nerves because of their attitude concerning Iran and nukes and  continual trade violations.  I know Americans rely on imports from these countries but I've tried not to let politics influence my knife buying but it is getting harder every day.  RR are some of the best globals out there and  I'd hate to stop promoting a brand I love but its getting tougher every day.

  • robert benton

Does China have a source for carbon steel? It would be more cost effective if the line were made there, but then there is the quality of the carbon steel itself. i agree with tobias on pakistan the quality of the knives are not very good.

  • Tobias Gibson

Of my Pakistani knives, their are two that I like.  One is a BW Custom "celtic skinner"  The knife is really nice but the sheath sucks.  Another is the Fox & Hound Ulu Skinner.  Sheath is pretty solid and the knife was decent for the price.  As for the others, they were probably worth what I paid, but I wish I had passed.   The money would've been better spent elsewhere.

  • Tobias Gibson

The folks at SMKW have commented on a couple occasions that they've had problems when shipping knives made with carbon steel from China.  I know a lot of their damascus comes from Pakistan, so I'm worried about that.

My how is they use the Condor factory in El Salvador for carbon steel.  They have had Marble Machetes made there.  The RR Paratrooper Bowie was also made there.

  • Jan Carter

    Tobias,

I am not sure the Condor factory is set up to make folders.  But here is a thought. American carbon steel..ship it over, have them made and shipped back as knives.  I know there are companies that ship materials all over to have knives assembled elsewhere

I have one in "Twisted" bone. I kinda like it. Looks good in person.......I feel......myself. But, some may not like it.

  • Billy Oneale

I have a Marbles Whittler in twisted bone, but not a RR. I think they look ok.
  • J.J. Smith III

I'm with Billy. I've got a Marbles too.
  • Billy Oneale

    Here is the Marbles Whittler.

  • Billy Oneale

And here is a Trapper I have from a JB Outman. This has more of the twisted bone look than the Marbles.

Okay!  That's enough Rough Rider Talk!  I just made a public announcement that until I have an equal number of USA made vs Chinese made knives I was going to buy 3 USA knives for every Rough Rider.  Having just bought a Rough Rider the other day, I need to pick up 3 USA knives before I can buy another.  That means Rough Riders now cost over $100 a piece (and often closer to $250) for me because of this new buying commitment.  I probably won't be in the market for a new Rough Rider until well after Christmas unless I land some really great deals on USA made scout knives on eBay!

  • Billy Oneale

I like the look of that Rough Rider.
