All 3 of the Toad Stickers are here, Blue/black swirl, Midnight blue swirl & Smooth White bone.

The Cell handled ones have hard snap and zero blade play. The Bone has snap, but not as crisp and there is a little wobble. I don't know if this is due to the extra care during assembly, but it doesn't affect the way I intend to use them. I look forward to the Tortoise cell knives now.

I did find that the middle knife's tip was bent on arrival. If the seller does not remedy this issue i will file a claim with ebay and place a warning on every forum i peruse.

  • Tobias Gibson

As I said the Toad Stickers are not the best judge of Rough Riders.  As for quality guarentee, the best you'll find is SMKW.  If you bought these from them, they'd send you a replacement free of charge and because the back and forth shipping would be more than the knife is worth, they'd just tell you to dispose of the bad knife however you choose.

  • Jan Carter

Brad, How do you intend to use the toad stickers?

  • Brad T.

Food cutting, letter opening & Toad sticking.

  • Brad T.

Correction to the description of the middle defective knife (RR1204) is "Purple Swirl" Celluloid. I really like that handle because you can see the brass liner through the swirl, which gives it Purple and gold appearance.

Tobias, I didn't expect a stout knife in this pattern, my only disappointment is in the seller who sold me a knife with a bent tip. Otherwise I am satisfied with the purchase of these knives. Am truly excited to receive the Tortoise Soddy and Congress next week.

  • Brad T.

the work knife has arrived. I am impressed with the stoutness of this knife. Strong pull, solid lock and a solid snap on closing. The congress is a little thin and the closing snap is weak on the Sheepfoot blades, but the blades are tight.

Nice ones Brad! I like imitation tortoise. I wish more companies used it!

  • Tobias Gibson

Okay, I'm fairly certain of it now.   The RR that are numbered:

    RR 13XX = 2013 releases

    RR12XX = 2012 Releases

    RR11XX = 2011 releases

    RR10XX = 2010 releases

Not sure about the ones before that. RR 9XX, RR 8XX, etc. but they could be 2009, 2008, and so on.  Can anyone confirm my suspicion?

    Craig Henry

Hmmm, interesting. What about RR4XX, RR5XX and RR6XX. One of my mini-Trappers with the old original tang stamp is RR493.

It would be nice if SMKW would just tell someone what is going on. I tried contacting them a year or so ago.....they never answered me.

Graig, I wrote a letter to one of the high profile members of their crew, about a small problem I had and he took care of the problem, plus wrote me back with an explanation. You may try writing them a personal letter, like I did.

Write a letter? I hope I haven't forgotten how to write! LOL! Thanks Robert!

I know we were talking about tortoise shell somewhere.  Can't quite remember where, however.  Here's a few more The RR505 Tortoise Toothpick and the RR495 Tortoise peanut.

From what I've heard, the US knife industry stopped making knives with tortoise shell handles in 1904.   Some companies in Europe continued to make them until perhaps the 1920s.

  • Billy Oneale

That is a nice handle material. I have several in the Rough Rider and Marbles line.

  • Brad T.

I like the tortoise handles because they match my sunglasses. A man must know how to match his accessories. LOL

  • Brad T.

Hmmm. The handle broke.. Don't remember dropping it. No more plastic handles for me. Into the rework box it will go, there is a 1 year waiting list once it is there.
  • Tobias Gibson

did it pop off or crack?

  • Brad T.

It cracked and broke off. Don't know when it happened, because I can't find the piece that is missing. I've decided to move it to the head of the line in re-work.

  • Steven Matthew

Nice to see someone that matches their sunglasses to their knife!

LOL! The tortoise seems to mach my tobacco stained teeth.

just kidding. But really, it does!

  • Billy Oneale

Here is my newest RR. I decided to EDC this one. It was not razor sharp out of the box as most of my RR's have been, but didn't take long to fix the problem. Anyway, it only cost me around $8.00 anyway. I'm really liking this one since it has a pocket clip and is really light.

  • Billy Oneale

Here is a view of the other side.

Interesting blade shape. Looks like it would be a nice slicer.

  • Steven Matthew

Billy, that's one nice looking knife!!!!!

  • Steven Matthew

quietly awaiting my next box of rough Riders.....feel like a kid on Christmas.

already got a place marked out for 'em on my new display case.

  • Alexander Noot

Got a small Damascus and jigged bone lockback by Rough Rider today. MAN that's a nice knife. I'll post some pictures of it later.

  • James Brockway

Hello to all, I'm new to the group, and to Blogging, but not collecting. I have been really impressed with the build quality if these knifes, I'm just finishing up getting the Outdoorsman Series

  • Tobias Gibson

Welcome James.  Any f friend of Rough Riders is a friend of mine.  About that Outdoorsman Series, it is an excellent series but it continues to grow.  I think it is RR most popular series.  It seems like every few months they issue a new knife in the series.   Maybe you can join me in pestering them in issuing a scout knife and five inch tooth in the series!

  • James Brockway

Be glad to, is that on Facebook?, is there a list anywhere of all the numbers in the series?

  • James Brockway

I first heard of them because of the steel used and would hold a good edge for woodcarving. Then I purchased whittler on Ebay, liked it a lot then I saw the "stoke of Luck" knives and I was hooked. Which is a long winded way of saying BOTH

  • Billy Oneale

Well, here it is. My wife made me buy this for the boot. Here is the Diamond Jim series. I think it is pretty cool also. i may have to get more patterns in this. The box is pretty cool also.

  • J.J. Smith III

Got it for the boot, huh?

Got me an extra sowbelly, in the moonshiner series, for the barrel.

  • Billy Oneale

They had the Diamond Jim in a sow belly on the show last Friday.
  • Alexander Noot

Finally got me a rough rider I like enough to keep in the collection permanently, what do you guys think?

    Jeff Keeler

New to the Rough Rider knives. Seen one a friend of mine had and he said it has been a good EDC knife with no problems. It was a canoe style. So to make a long story short, I have a canoe with jigged bone handles, RR048, comes with the older beige box, which is NIB. Also purchased a smooth tobacco bone barlow, RR783, with a inlay shield shaped like a acorn. Bought both on Ebay at very good prices. Looking forward to receiving them. I'll get some pics out as soon as they arrive.

  • Tobias Gibson

    Hi Jeff,

You'll notice a little bit of blade rub with the Canoe.(Its no worse than on a Case knife)  The Barlow is part of the Outdoorsman Series.  I like their Barlows.  The blades are tight and the springs are strong but not so strong that you can't open the blades.  In fact I like all three patterns of Barlows they make, the small lock back, the standard two blade and the grand-daddy.  All are really nice and you can't beat the price.

Got my two Rough Rider knives yesterday through the mail. Awesome blades. Like them both so much, not sure which one to carry. Canoe Jigged Bone Handle RR048, and Smooth Tobacco Bone Barlow RR783. IMG_0966.JPGIMG_0969.JPG

  • Jan Carter

    BARLOW!

Love the Tobacco bone, the shield and the pattern.  Carry, enjoy and let us know what you think about it as an EDC

  • Brad T.

I ordered 2 more Work Knives. Smooth Tobacco and a Jigged Amber bone, should be here by Monday.

  • Brad T.

Alexander, that is a sweet looking knife. Is it a true damascus or etched?

  • Featured

    Craig Henry

My name's not Alexander, but (lol), it's real San Mai Damascus.

    http://www.smkw.com/webapp/eCommerce/products/Rough+Rider/Rough+Rid...

  • Alexander Noot

Yup, so real damascus with a carbon steel core. It's one of their two most expensive knives so far. But from what I can tell also one of the nicest knives they've produced.

  • Brad T.

    What about the bolster?

  • Featured

    Craig Henry

As far as I know.....the bolster too.

  • Brad T.

My Smooth Tobacco Bone Work knife came in yesterday. Bone handle options only from now on. The lighting makes it look paler than it is.

  • Steven Matthew

Brad. That is one fine knife.
  • Brad T.

My Amber Jigged bone version will be here today.
