Railsplitter I think that you ara right about the #61 Deluxe. The #72 is similar to Queens S&M Mountain Man lockback too isn't it? There are some similarities on some of GEC's patterns.

  • Jan Carter

Donnie says come on, we will take you tidioute.  The family would love the hardware store

  • Tom Peterson

Jan, tell Donnie that I am up for that! I need to get some more work and reduce my cutlery spending to make that happen though. Right now a vacation does not look too likely. I may have to enjoy it vicariously through you, Donnie & Johnny once again.

  • johnny twoshoes

Tom, you can ride with Jan and Donnie that saves green. When you get here I can put up a tent for you guys, that saves money. We will feed you breakfast, that also saves money.

Then we will take you to GEC and that never saves money. : (

  • Jan Carter

    Johnny,

I read that twice and laughed until I cried.  I imagined everyone in my little truck, saving and counting all our pennies to get there with enough money to buy more knives

  • Morrie Mayfield

    Hi,

Could you swing by Seattle and pick me up??????

    Morrie

  • Jan Carter

    Morrie,

If I could make out that way I would pick you up and then we would swing down to AZ and pick up Dave T.  We would just make a big trip out of it

  • johnny twoshoes

    Well, it's true Jan.

Time is flying and we will be meeting soon, I can't wait. Getting the green saved up for a couple of knives.

  • Tom Peterson

    Johnny,

You are too funny fella!!! While I appreciate your offer (to impose on Jan and Donnie) I might have to pass this year. I do have a couple of tents and a van for the trip but with the cost of gas these days I don't know if there would be any money left for knives once we got there! My gas bill last month was over $400 and most of my driving is within 60 miles of my house. I wish that they would have an option for out of state folks to be able to have a chance at one of the Rendezvous knives - like a drawing to be able to buy one or something. Maybe have 30 for the folks who came to the event and a mail in drawing for 10 -20 others who couldn't make it. If I told my wife that I was going on a vacation to go to a knife factory she would likely tell me not to come back!

Hey Guys, The Bull Nose is showing it's face in Titusville.

    http://greateasterncutlery.net/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/71-b...

Of course I think this looks awesome and once we get some patina pics coming in of these beauties, it's gonna be priceless.

  • johnny twoshoes

Tom, I'm sure Jan wouldn't mind.

$400 dollars on gas is way too much, I could buy a horse for that much. Thats knife money we are talking about my friend, it's time to go ahh green and save some green. Try one of those Chevy Volts out.

    Just an idea!!!

  • Jan Carter

Here's a little leg up for all you folks that depend on this blog for the inside dope...... (OK, I stole it)

Okay, here's a tidbit you all can share on the other boards and come out sounding like the smartest guy/gal in the room.  You know that "thumb rest" on the top of the saw blade on the Lumber Jack ?????  Gang, I got it straight from the designer, and master knife builder himself....that is NOT a thumb rest, it is a  WIRE STRIPPER!!!!!

  • Tom Peterson

    Johnny,

Do you know how much one of those Volts costs?

  • Jan Carter

    31K

  • Dana Mayo

Hi all, I was cutting through a steaming hot corned beef the other day and I wondered; "How hot is to hot"  Can I adversely affect the temper of the steel this way?

  • Alexander Noot

Tempering of steel takes place at around 200+ degrees celcius (for comparison, boiling water is only 100 celcius.)

Also, when tempering steel this usually happends in sessions of one hour.

Cutting Corned beef could (In theory) affect the steel, if the corned beef would stay indefinately hot and you'd leave the knife in there for a LONG time.

In practise, even boiling your knife won't affect the temper as long as it doesn't happen for hours on end.

  • Dana Mayo

Alexander, Thanks a lot for that information

  • Dana Mayo

Can someone enlighten me about this wrinkle in the blade. I see this tendency in most of the blades (some more than others) How is this properly described?

  • Jan Carter

Anything here you cant live without?

    Tom,

There appear to be a number of patriots on Ebay right now if you are looking for any to fill the slots.

  • Tom Peterson

Thanks Jan, I have at least one of the ones on there. Not sure about the other(s).

Morrie will be happy about the single blade #48 in SS. I will be loving more Elk!

  • Morrie Mayfield

Boy, Tom are you right about that!!!!!!!!!!

    Morrie

  • johnny twoshoes

Of course GEC is gonna be in Erie on the 14th next month. It looks like it's gonna be Christine too. That figures, trout season starts on the 14th, ohh well.

Guess we'll be waiting for July.

I wonder if the 66 moose in Cocobolo will have swedged blades?

  • In Memoriam

    Robert Burris

I think boiling water may help to dull the edge on your knife more quickly. I'd stay away from boiling water with your blades. My Grandfather told me this when they were scolding a pig to remove the hair from the skin they were very carefull not to let the boiling water touch their knife.

That's what I'm talking about. I want to see the Cocobolo before I make up my mind. That's such a usefull knife and just the right size for a pair of summer shorts!

  • stephen tungate

great looking knife jan i really like that one.....

  • Jan Carter

I will keep my eyes open for a pic of the cocobolo Robert.  You know it is coming in Primitive bone also

  • In Memoriam

    Robert Burris

That's right, I need to see them all before I pick one.

  • Clint Thompson

    Primitive bone you say?!!

  • johnny twoshoes

  • Alexander Noot

Robert, heat makes corrosion go faster, and the knife is most vulnerable by the edge....so what your grandfather told you makes some sense.
  • Clint Thompson

I love this knife.  Here is my Northfield UN-X-LD#722112 Autumn gold Jig Bone.  This is my first of many to come of the GEC line.  I will be putting this knife in one of my article coming out later this year.

  • Jan Carter

    Clint,

I am so pleased you got the knife and like it. It sure is a beauty and I am looking forward to the article

  • In Memoriam

    Robert Burris

Yea Alex, those were some old carbon fteel knives, probably with a low RC. value on the hardness. Somewhat soft by todays standards, I guess. Very, very sharp though!

  • In Memoriam

    Robert Burris

Dang, Johnny is that the large lockback we have been waiting for?

  • Tom Peterson

Clint, great bone on that #72! I wish that they would've made the clip in that bone too.

Robert, hard to tell by the dimensions on the ruler next to the mockup. Looks shorter than a #23 lockback would - at least to me.

  • Clint Thompson

    Thanks Jan.

  • In Memoriam

    Robert Burris

Yep, Tom, looks to be 3/8" short but alot bigger than their 73 lockback. I wish they made things more clear so I'd know what to buy.

  • Jan Carter

    Robert,

They have been adding to the clues weekly so maybe Mon or Tues we will have more info on it

  • Jan Carter

Anyone attending this show?  Looks like Ms Chris will be there

GREAT EASTERN CUTLERY will be at the ERIE GUN SHOW on SATURDAY, APRIL 14th  & SUNDAY, APRIL 15th, Bayfront Convention Center, Erie, PA. (Chris)

Thanks Miss Jan, I need to know if that's gonna be their large lockback. I need one, I have been using a Robeson Mt. Man [4 1/2"]. It's my last using folder that I need to replace with GEC knives. So please let me know. Thanks.

  • Jan Carter

Just wanted to let ya'll know.  There is an extra iKC 2011 knife that was just discovered...........................

  • In Memoriam

    Robert Burris

Are you gonna keep us in suspence?

  • Jan Carter

Looks like it is sold now

  • Ron Cooper

I just wanted to give our Miss Jan a shout-out for posting about the recently discovered 2011 iKC Club Knife. I jumped on it like a vampire on a bulging vein! Jan also notified Christine at GEC that I would be calling about the knife ~ That allowed the transaction to proceed as smooth as silk. Thank you, Miss Jan!

I spoke to Christine Tucker this morning and tied up all the loose ends. She told me that she was sending the knife over for a final inspection and oiling, then sending it out to me.

Yay! I'm happier than a pig in slop! I promise to post some pictures as soon as it arrives! Oink! Oink! Snort! Snort!

  • In Memoriam

    Robert Burris

That's great news Ron. I know you will be happy with it.

  • Jan Carter

    Ron,

The last one got the best reception!!  Glad it went from orphaned to loved.

  • johnny twoshoes

So glad to hear you got one, these are great knives and I have thoroughly enjoyed mine. I will be giving it more EDC time, I think. Too many knives, not enough pockets.
