Queen Cutlery & Friends

Knives have been made at the factory of Queen Cutlery Company of Titusville Pennsylvania for over 100 years. It is arguably the oldest and last American Cutlery that truly continues to produce knives in the same way as they were produced there when the factory opened in 1902. The factory’s first tenant was the Schatt & Morgan Cutlery Company: Queen Cutlery Company displaced Schatt & Morgan there in 1933. Queen City Cutlery Company first began to produce knives in 1918 around the end of the First World War, incorporated in 1922, and shortened their name to “Queen Cutlery Company” in January of 1946.  Purchased by Daniels Family Cutlery Corporation on September 18, 2012

Fabelhaft, Stefan.  Hope you can get your hands on some Queen knives over there in Deutschland.

Saw this on the FB page and just had to share

Queen Cutlery Company The knives are sharpened, they're exactly like you would want a knife for your collection. We've given out a couple different types of knives, a congress and also a small fixed blade trout knife. The kids seem to be loving them just as much as we love seeing the excitement on their faces!

This is Brennen's Thank you card. I think it's safe to say he enjoys his knife. He is from right here in Titusville, His dad is a Queen user as well. Brennen's parents are going to bring him back year after year for his Queen Kiddo Knife. We're excited to see him come back and watch his collection grow while he does!  See the pics here

  • Jan Carter

I thought it would be nice if we got to see some of the folks at Queen at work and get to know who does what there.  So here is the first bit of info provided of course by our own Ms Ashley

This is Faye Maseman, she is our shop expeditor .

  • jeff

    i love that sleeveboard!

  • Tobias Gibson

looks fishy to me.  Sunfishy, that is!

  • Jean-François

Is it a sleeveboard, or a "baby"?

  • Billy Oneale

It's nice. Now I want one.
  • Jan Carter

    Jean-Francois,

It is a sleeveboard and I had to have it after seeing the bolsters!

  • Jan Carter

Next up in the get to know Queen is Trish Shetler she works in cleaning and inspecting.

  • Ron Cooper

    Well, thank you, Miss Jan!

A big "Howdy do!" to Miss Trish! Thanks for cleaning and inspecting those beautiful Queen knives for us! And, since I missed my opportunity a few days ago, I would also like to say "Howdy" to Miss Faye!

Thanks to both of these ladies who toil at the Queen factory to bring us those high quality knives that we have grown to love over the years. Thanks, ladies!

  • Jean-François

Thanks, Jan for the info about the S&M sleeveboard. I thought there could be an effect of the perspective, and I never had seen such bolsters on sleeveboards or sunfishes, only on "babies". Very nice !

    And hey!!!  Ashley's mom Cindy

This is CIndy Nottingham , she works in assembly and is the new appointed Dept head.

  • Ron Cooper

Howdy, Miss Cindy! Congratulations on your recent promotion to Dept. Head! I was given that title once but it wasn't because I was in charge of anything. But, hey! That's a story for another day. Smiley Faces Smiley Faces

At least now we know where Miss Ashley gets her good looks from. Word!

  • Tobias Gibson

Is anyone else amused/intriguied by the number of women who manufacture a product mostly bought by men?

  • John G Cable

Tobias, stop and think a minute.... Either or both your Mother or Grandmother knew their way around a kitchen and many such as my Grandmother born in 1884 grew up in the country on a farm and knew one heck of a lot more about knives and uses than I'll ever learn. :-)  So it makes sense to me that making a knife that works well would "also" be a tasking that many women would know very much about.

  • Paul Ring

    Point well taken!
  • Ron Cooper

    Toby,

Why do you think they call it "Queen...Cutlery?"

    Duh!

(Forgive me. I woke up on the impish, sarcastic side of the bed this morning)

  • Tobias Gibson

Well from what I understand it was originally Queen City Cultery and took the name from where it is made, Titusville.  At one time Titusville was a largest oil town in Pennsylvania, and possibly the entire USA and was known as the "Queen City of Oil"

A queen city is the largest city in a state when that city is not the state's capital (Chicago would the Queen City of Illinois)  Over time, Queen City Cutlery Company dropped the word "city" from its name and it became Queen Cutlery.   The Queen City Tang stamp is still trademarked by Queen from what I understand and is occasionally still used.

    Sorry Ron, I couldn't resist.

  • Ron Cooper

    Toby,

I was just being snarky. Since your query was in regard to women making the knives. I was implying that was the reason they were called "Queen." If it were men making the knives perhaps they would call it "King" Cutlery, based upon my Alice Through The Looking Glass logic?

But thanks for the history lesson, nonetheless!

  • Tobias Gibson

Ron, I was just being snarkier!   My guess is before WWII they were primarily made by men.  During WWII  easily half the employees by knife factories were women.

  • Ron Cooper

Ah! But your Snark was filled with useful tidbits of information. While mine was just a meaningless distortion of reality. Hence, my Snark was snarkier.

  • Jan Carter

So are we ready to meet another one of the Queen folks?

    Snarkier LOL!

I understand BTW, that some of the Q-Tacs are available out there :)

  • Howard P Reynolds

Bring em on, Jan.  Took a tour of the factory a couple years ago, but don't remember any names.

  • Jan Carter

This is John Vroman and Matt Decker (in the back) they straighten the knives makes sure they are in complete working order.

  • Ken Spielvogel

Keep up the good work guys.

  • Jan Carter

And meet Larry Bowls he works in the grinding room and has also been appointed to Dept. Head.

  • Howard P Reynolds

Hellooooo, Larry, John, and Matt.  Thanks, Jan.  Great to see the guys and girls who make the knives.

  • Jan Carter

    Howard,

Certainly my pleasure.  You know I knew that Queen had hired and was expanding.  It is good to see them naming dept heads and giving recognition to hard workers

  • Jan Carter

Make your plans now.  Queen is host their first all out knife show since Ken Daniels began as owner.  IKC WILL BE PRESENT, I WOULDNT MISS THIS ONE FOR THE WORLD....................JOIN ME AND LETS MAKE PLANS TO MEET

  • Ken Spielvogel

Jan - I will be there. That's where we go to the Ohio Gun Collectors Show, so I wouldn't miss it that close to home.

  • Jan Carter

Ken, That is exciting!!  I know it is a bit down the road but I happy to know I can meet more of our friends from iKC!

  • Jan Carter

OK guys!  I always tell you who the pictures are, can you tell me who these two are working in the shop?

  • Ron Cooper

    Ken and Courtney! Duh.

    Ken and Courtney?

  • Howard P Reynolds

Hey, Jan.  Remind us once in a while about Queen Fest.  October 2014 is too far for me to remember.

  • Jan Carter

Howard I certainly will.  I want to meet as many members as possible there.

Y'all are right, That is Ken and Courtney.  It is my understanding they are working on the newest release for Franks Classics.  I do not know if you have seen the shield Franks is using but I do love it!

  • Tobias Gibson

That looks remarkably like the Old Man of the Sea, Ernest Hemingway

  • Jan Carter

  • Jan Carter

Franks is a very cool shield.  I am wondering what Queen Pattern he is attaching it too?

  • Jan Carter

  • Jan Carter

  • Jan Carter

wooohooo!  I know what the old man shield is on and it is sweet!

  • Jan Carter

A quick thank you to Queen Cutlery.  Our 2013 Community Mountain Man is on the way!  Can not wait to see what shield and tang we got
