Queen Cutlery & Friends

Knives have been made at the factory of Queen Cutlery Company of Titusville Pennsylvania for over 100 years. It is arguably the oldest and last American Cutlery that truly continues to produce knives in the same way as they were produced there when the factory opened in 1902. The factory’s first tenant was the Schatt & Morgan Cutlery Company: Queen Cutlery Company displaced Schatt & Morgan there in 1933. Queen City Cutlery Company first began to produce knives in 1918 around the end of the First World War, incorporated in 1922, and shortened their name to “Queen Cutlery Company” in January of 1946.  Purchased by Daniels Family Cutlery Corporation on September 18, 2012

I was able to get to the Great Lakes Knife Show on Friday and got to have a nice talk with Ken Daniels.  He had a couple of those whittlers out for sale and told me that it had been on the cover of Blade, though he hadn't yet seen it.  He told me that it's the knife he's currently carrying, and pulled one out of his pocket to prove it.  I was really impressed with those knives, and feel that the cover exposure was well earned.

I almost picked one up, but he had a Ruple Sowbelly that I just couldn't pass up.

    Very good looking knife, Cory.

Queen Cutlery Co. would like introduce our new Master Cutler, Jeff Schley. Jeff is 46 years old and has been married to his wife, Julie, for 24 year, and is the father of two sons , Blaine & Jeffrey Jr. He started his journey into the knife world right out of high school on October 1990, beginning in blade finishing. Management saw major potential, moving him to set-up in the grinding room right away. To allow him to understand the full complexity of the factory, they moved him to maintenance for 2 years while attending Harry T Kerr Center in the evenings for Electrical and Hydraulics. This gave him an extensive knowledge of all the machines along with his knowledge of building a knife from start to finish. After all the years of training and schooling, it would eventually lead
him to become supervisor of both the grinding and blade finishing departments.

After 13 years at Queen, he transferred to Ontario Knife Company in Franklinville, NY, in 2003. There he began a 5 year stint supervising the press and forge rooms and spent a few years being Special Projects Manager and Maintenance/Tool and Dye. His final years at Ontario, he became Supervisor of press, forge, grinding, swedge, tempering, power coating, and handle rooms. Now coming home to Queen, He is serving as our Master Cutler. Queen Cutlery has great confidence that he'll be able to improve the overall quality and bring new exciting designs to their line.

    Dale,

This is the info I have right now

Queen is releasing the Schatt & Morgan #71 Express in a limited run of just 100 knives.  Fifty will be finished with Desert Ironwood and fifty with Curly Maple.  At this point, my understanding is they’ll retail around $250.

I was about to put this up for sale recently and was wanting to double check my facts. It's a Northwoods Scagel #8 Grand Daddy Barlow with sambar stag 4 7/8" closed. There's no date on the tang, just Northwoods Gladstone Michigan USA. I believe it was made by Queen in very limited numbers (100?). Any info that you could share to help me decide on a fair price would be appreciated.

  • Dan Lago

I have been told by Queen informally that they did make this knife- but not the edition size?. I have one of these from a several years back -- I paid 125, and glad to get it - It is a very nice knife with the little Scagel touches and the massive stag. The action is especially smooth - very tight.

To be honest, your photos show such great detail, I think your knife shows a bit more handling, little loss of polish compared to the knife I own.   The box was a white plastic hard case, quite nice, with a green cloth bag inside.  Best of luck in keeping it or selling.

    Dan

  • Richard Schuchman

Yeah, the stag is amazing! So detailed and rich and gnarly! Great action like you said - nice half stop, and I love how thick the blade is. It's the best knife in my collection and a real beast. There's no scratches or marks on it, but I'm at least the second owner and I didn't get it with the box, so I have no idea how it looked mint. I'd love to hang onto it, but it's one of those I can't bring myself to carry and my kid has no interest in knives, so I figure I should just sell it to someone who can appreciate it. I've seen the same knife on AAPK and KnivesShipFree for $250. I can't find one on the Bay. If you got yours for $125 I'd consider that a great deal! Odd that Queen doesn't just come out and say, "Yeah we made those." Some sort of licensing snafu?

  • Dan Lago

Yes, I would not be surprised at the 250 price - it is a truly beautiful knife, and a very serious piece of equipment. And, I would be surprised if was as big as 100 pieces - Your is only the second one I've seen in 10 years. I got mine at a sale, and the guy wanted something before the show ended - and I got lucky.  Not sure if my kids will want my knives, but I have determined not to sell.  Too sad to watch them all leave, and I figure if they wait longer to sell them, they will eventually get more than I can selling now.  Document, show off, everything I can do to convince them of the value of what I own, even if they don't like knives - it will be their problem - I am collecting - they will have to deal with it.  Best luck in deciding.

I think Queen has always been shy about discussing private label knives - I don't understand business, but I have heard they only put their own name on about half of what they produce-- who knows?

    Dan

  • Carl Bradshaw

I have heard that as well Dan. Queen has had their fingers in quite a few different names over the years, but they only really take credit for Queen, Schatt & Morgan, and Robeson.  But they've contributed to Winchester, Case, Case Classic, Moore Maker, Cripple Creek, Colonel Coon, BlueGrass, and probably many more that I can't remember.

  • Richard Schuchman

You'd think a high quality reproduction like this they'd want to take credit for, but maybe Northwoods wanted the kudos. I wish they'd have at least put a date on it to better track it. I lose track of the different makers. I thought Northwoods, like Tidioute, was a subsidiary of GEC, so I thought GEC was the maker at first. Why bring Queen into it?

  • Railsplitter

My apologies if this is not the right place to ask.

Does anybody know if Queen will be at the Gateway Area Knife Show on January 28th?

The Knife Show Schedule on the Queen website states that Queen will be there only on January 29th but it looks like it might be a typo.

Anybody know if they will be there both days?

    Thanks.

    Rick T.

  • Jan Carter

    Rick,

As they are at SHOT it may take me a day or so to get an answer but I have asked Ryan.

  • Railsplitter

Thanks for the heads up Jan! Looks interesting.

  • Railsplitter

    Dennis,

I think I may have spotted you at the show yesterday but I was engaged in conversation and by the time I turned back around you were gone and I never saw you again.

Saw a guy with a black backpack and a red shirt. Was that you?

  • Dennis

Hey Railsplitter I look for you I was there from 10 to 12. I did have a red shirt no backpack I went in and look first and didn't find anything I wanted to trade for so I never went and got backpack. Sorry I missed you.

The second run of the John Henry Express auto should be shipping next week. My understanding is this run will have Stainless liners rather then Brass.  Very cool because that means this first run will be easily distinguished from the first run

  • Tracey Reed

We are excited about the handle materials too!  There is supposed to be more of the Desert Ironwood, but also Leopard Wood, Black G10, Green G10, Red Acrylic, and Red Shockwood handles.

Hi Jan...thanks for directing me to the proper forum. Here is the best I can do on the tang stamp. I'm going to include other photos as well. Thank you. Don

  • Don Neiman

additionl photo of tang stamp. Still learning this site...no fun being a neophyte.

  • Don Neiman

Here is another Queen knife I recently acquired. It is in mint condition and although I searched the Queen catalogs for this particular knife it was not listed. All help as to when made would be appreciated. Hope this Model 89 can be identified.

  • Frederick Fisher

It's in the 2016 catalog with the DFC tang stamp

  • Jan Carter

some news for the Schatt & Morgan 71 Express Auto collectors.  We’ll shortly see another short run coming through with some new handle materials.

  • Don Schriver

Why are these so expensive? I have not seen one for less that 325.00! WOW
  • Jan Carter

    Don,

I know that a lot has gone into producing these and making sure they are worth the cost.  Every dealer I have spoken with says they are selling out fast also

  • Don Schriver

I'm positive production is difficult. I know they are selling like hot cakes. As nutz as I am 300 plus is too much.

The Queen show is going on this weekend.  The factory would have been open to tours today.  Sure wish we could have made it

  • Tracey Reed

Good morning from Titusville, PA!  The turnout yesterday at the factory for tours was fantastic.  After a busy morning of constant tours, knife sales, and information sharing, there was a short lunch break for the factory.  During the break, more than 60 people gathered to kick off the afternoon round of tours, and they just kept coming!  I visited with people from Canada, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, and Illinois.

The weather cooperated this year, the factory looked great inside and out, inventory was available for purchase, and as the day went on, the smiles, handshakes, and hugs continued.  What a great event!

Today the show begins at noon in a new location, Timberlake Lodge.  Dinner with the vendors and people attending the show will close what I am sure will be a busy day.  Tomorrow, Saturday, the show will run 8am - 4pm.

This area is beautiful.  Camping is how we stay, but there are also great hotels and restaurants to compliment all there is to do and learn about the history of Titusville and Oil City.

We hope to see even more iKnife members here next year!

  • Jan Carter

    Tracey,

I thought that was you I saw helping out in there!  I hear the kiddo program did a fine "business" today also!  Bless you and Danny for being there, I very much intend to be there next year!
