One of my favourite knives. Made by J.S. Holler Solingen for Adolph Blaich, a sporting goods retailer in San Francisco circa 1890-1910. It has an old wound on the back side that gives it a little additional character.
I can certainly see why that might be a favorite. It's a real beauty! I love the color of that bone and the match striker nail pull on that deep etched "Premium Stock Knife" master blade
It's always nice to know the history of an older piece like this. How did you happen to come by this knife? Do you anything about this knife's history? Inquiring minds need to know.
"Even the plainest Stock Knives (hence the name Premium Stockman) were considered "Premium" or high priced knives. Pearl handled Stock Knives were most often called "Sunday dress knives."
I'll have to get a pearl handled one for sure now. LOL!
I'm about 99% positive I'm getting a Case 33 in pearl next month......when my knife allowance gets here. Of course the problem is, if I love it, I'll want another for EDC.......EDC/OCD. Sheesh.
Was in Bradford over last weekend and stopped in to Main Street Mercantile (45 Main St.). They had this Stockman in a display case. Didn't buy it but thought you guys might like to see it. $50.
lol i'll be in Lebonan Missouri tomorrow so I'll have plenty to look at. wewill be heading to Branson from there. I should be able to hit both shepard of the hills cutlery stores.
Lee, a locking stockman would possibly be the ultimate knife. I like the traditional pocket knives I grew up with and the stockman was one of them. Actually, when I think of pocket knives of this type the stockman is the first thing that comes to mind. However, I've become spoiled by the safety of locking pocket knives in the past few years. What this means is I've become accustomed to not needing to be as careful. I have cut my index finger to the bone twice in my life because the knife didn't lock and I was careless. If the knife blade locked my carelessness would have not resulted in red stuff coming out of my finger. My greatest accomplishment the first time it happened (about 10 years old) was hiding the seriousness of the cut from my mother. She would have had me in the ER! :) Anyway, congratulations on your find. Not knowing any more than I do I just assumed there was no such knife. Wrong again I'm glad to say. :)_
I have always loved the stockman pattern. I especially like the one that has the cutting punch blade for making a new hole in heavy saddle leather in a pinch when you don't have a propper leather punch handy.
I just purchased one of the new Case Carbon Fiber Stockman with the more streamline (flatter topped) clip blades and the other usual style blades. This is one sharp looking knife with great springs. Blades did need a bit of Sharpmaker and stropping to bring out a touch to bleed edge. To say the I love my newest Stockman. It's going to take something some more special to make me add this one to the collectors box. Check this one out gals and guys!!! J.D.
That's a great looking Marbles ya got there, Leopold! Cool looking shield and nice looking stag handle! Have you been able to date its approximate age?
I see that both Gerber and Rough Rider are now making a lockback stockman.
