SMOKY MOUNTAIN KNIFE WORKS MEMORIES

This group began as we followed Knives Live together and had some fun.  I have made the choice for it to remain as a place to put up pics of members trips, deals, and SMKW discussions

    Hi Everyone,

That's a wicked cool knife "The Colt Lady Canoe"  with pink smooth bone CT376. Bone makes an awesome handle. My daughter would love it. Bone is one of my favorite scale materials. I know I'm too late to add my guess in for the tonight's contest, but if I could I'd say 22.

    John

This weeks contest is under the heading of "How much will the Rough Riders Cost?" It's at the top of this page.

  • Jan Carter

    John,

I got a request from one of the girls at work for one of those too.  It seems to be a popular little knife

  • Tobias Gibson

I know most of us are here for the Knives Live TV show contest  but I also know i'm not the only one remembers Steve Koontz.  For those interested Steve is now selling on eBay under the name of "Sirbladesalot"    He's got a lot of purty Case knives up for sell right now. http://www.ebay.com/sch/sirbladesalot/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&...

  • ken benson

Thanks Toby. I will check them out.

  • Jack Pappy Lewis

I forgot to get in on this one, but I'll watch any how and chat

  • Tobias Gibson

    14.  I don't know if we have a contest or not  but my guess is 14  (Fourteen)  Hope I win!

I'm sorry, I was too busy cooking for a bunch of young people last night. I could not participate.

  • Stanley May

I really appreciated seeing all the knives for sale.  This was a tremendous service provided by SMKW.  But equally I enjoyed the IKC member interaction, comments and friendships formed.  I will really miss this.

    That's so very true, Steve.

  • Jon Salmon

My favorite memory of KLTV was when I got Josh Hill to do his "full-blown, pedal to the metal" impression of the wrestler "The Nature Boy" Rick Flair in exchange for me making a donation to their "Knife for a Soldier" program. I still have it on my DVR. Also the famous "Blow-gun incident" !! I think the show was at its BEST when Josh and Steve Koontz were hosting together - their on-air chemistry and witty "country boy"  banter were just so entertaining (and so informative about knife collecting) that I rarely missed a show. Tony and Jay also brought me countless hours of enjoyment.  The whole crew just seem like terrific "salt of the earth" type people. I came to IKC because Josh recommended it on the show, and I have enjoyed the chats here during the shows so very much.  The members here at IKC are just great folks.  I certainly plan to continue participating in IKC, but I can't begin to describe how much I will miss the KLTV shows.  It has been so frustrating that they have been unwilling or unable to at least keep the show going via webcast - very sad.

  • Tobias Gibson

Jon, you are so right about the chemistry  between Steve and his "SON" Josh. It was fun to watch and it translated to me picking up the phone and placing orders. Their enthusiasm was fantastic and infectious!

  • Tobias Gibson

Back when there was Tactical Knives TV, Josh worked with a guy named John.  After a few shows John left and Steve stepped in as a replacement.  Josh had his weekly code word going at that time.    And as Steve was new he let Steve pick it.  Steve picked minuteman and as a bonus, he said if someone could tell him what he did while he was in the military he would  have another prize for them.  But they needed to be specific .   This was my answer:

[Steve] joined  the U.S. Air Force after graduating high school and served  from 1983-1987  He served with the 44th Missile Security and was honorably discharged as a Senior Airman.  So that's my answer and I'm sticking to it.

Now of course my sources could be wrong and that wouldn't be the first time.

And with the codeword being minuteman, Steve's squadron could've also
been 1st Continental Light Dragoons which fought in the Revolutionary
War, but I figured he's NOT that old.

I went on with several follow emails stating the actual base he has served on other minor details to the point that you'd think I was some crazy stalker. But Steve said to be "Specific" and I didn't know how specific he wanted me to be.

In the end I was the only person who got the right answer.  And for my troubles I won a Queen City Prototype Jack knife that never went into production.

I thought I would add this to the memories, since it will all soon be only a memory.

  • Ron Cooper

I love Jeremy's photograph! But I also love Tobias' story and the knife he won for that story and his correct answer to Josh's code word quiz. Great story, Toby! And, an equally great knife! Thanks for sharing both with us!

Hog - You had better be careful. The natives don't look friendly.

  • Chuck Parham

Is this group going to disolve now? Oh Lord, what will we do now??

  • Tobias Gibson

I think we should keep the groups going ans see where it goes.  It could be a place to  discuss the latest catalog, share any news about the store, post coupon codes for special deals and the like. Even showing off your latest pictures from a SMKW event or purchase.

  • John H Naffke Jr

Being new to the group I agree with Tobias, SMKW is a great destination and resource for collectors. Earlier this year I planned a road trip to Nashville I included a stay over in Sevierville to visit SMKW. I spent about six hours wandering around and picking out additions to my collection. It would have been nice to be able to share the experience with like minded folks as most of my friends do not share my appreciation of knives and Smoky Mountain Knife Works as a destination.

  • Jan Carter

No Chuck I will not dissolve the group. simply dont have the heart.  We had too much fun in here.  I may rename it ans tie it into SMKW, just have not thought of the best way yet but have something fun in mind for the first two weeks of November so keep your eyes open

  • Tobias Gibson

How about "The Group formerly known as Knives Live"?   And then once they get a new TV contract we can call it the  "Knives Live Group"!

    Hopes Springs Eternal!

  • Tobias Gibson

Another reason this group needs to survive.   Whacky Ninja Knives!!!  I'm stunned this didn't sell!   Ebay listing: 360738852257  a href="http://www.ebay.com/itm/RARE-RANDALL-STARFLIGHT-THROWER-KNIFE-WITH-SHEATH-REAL-COOL-/360738852257?_trksid=p2047675.l2557&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT&nma=true&si=SqxL20aI3QY4%252F2I9bd8IJOjlDcE%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc" target="_blank">Randall Starflight Thrower >

How about..."Knives Come Alive, without TV"........lol

We're gonna miss it. So sad.

  • Tobias Gibson

As Josh is a member here, maybe we can get him to give us some kind of weekly update. I'm thinking  quick updates on upcoming things for the week, Weekly sale items, new release info, maybe an occasional sneak peak or special discount codes.

It would be great if  it could turn into something like chat sessions  with special guests from SMKW on occasion but that would probably take some serious coordination. I think it would also require more participation.

  • Jan Carter

Well Josh, Tony and Jay are all members.  Jay will get a forum for his vault list and I would love to co ordinate having Josh and Tony do something with us also

  • Billy Oneale

We could look on the website and see who could find the best knife buy, or best buy from the monthly catalog. We could even look for the worst looking knife. There are a lot of things we can do. Maybe even find the weirdest item in the knife cave.

  • Tobias Gibson

    new hat came today!

    Makes even me look good!

    Nice hat!

    Charles Sample

Kinda bitter sweet there Tobias.  You get your Knives Live hat when there is no more Knives Live!

  • Tobias Gibson

Jan, I've been thinking about new names for this group.  If we are thinking of the group as a place to discuss SMKW activities, how about:

Smoky Mountain Knife Words or  Smoky Mountain Knife Talk?

  • Tobias Gibson

Charles, as for that the Hat.  Two Weeks ago it was just  KnivesLiveTV hat.  but now.... Now its a VINTAGE Knives Live TV hat!

  • Featured

    Charles Sample

    Oh, definitely VINTAGE now! LOL

  • Billy Oneale

    Nice hat, Toby
  • Tobias Gibson

As promised my last purchases.  As money has been a little tight, I wasn't able to grab  the Randall Ninja Fighting Stars or even the Col. Coon Stag Barlow. But I managed to to pick up some other SMKW house brands.

Combat Ready, Fighting Knife. CBR03.  It was on sale this month.  AUS8 Steel.  Very thick and a tad heavy.  I'm might  swap out the cord wrapping with some homemade handles.

Heavy Hunter Series Sidewinder.  This was also a shop special.  Going about three or four dollars less than list price.  The discounts on these this and the CBR more than made up for the $6.99 flat rate shipping.  The knife is pretty good but I'm not sure if the finger groove drip is going to work long term with my hand. Still, it is one solid knife and the sheath is nice but a little tricky for us lefties!

And then there was the CT473 Colt Hawkbill.  The stag bone on this knife is great.  The swedge on the hawk blade is also really cool.  All in all, I'd say this knife is must for hawkbill collectors.

I'll have more to say about these knives in their associated iKC groups. But as they were bought  via the KLTV show, I figured I'd post them here first!

Black Friday sale at SMKW.com just started!   $5 flat rate BLFR13  (or it might be blfr13)   Gift cards for purchases over $50 or $100 !  Ends December 1.

  • Jan Carter

Hey everyone, Tobias and I have tossed around some great ideas for how to still make this a viable group.  I have spoken with Jay about several of them and I am thinking we are going to make this group a SMKW group.

Lets do as Tobias did, put the newest sales in here and the Monthly

COLLECTOR'S CABINET CATALOG will go in the box above.  Let's celebrate all things SMKW here

  • Billy Oneale

It sounds good to me, although I haven't bought anything lately.

  • Tobias Gibson

Just realized my last SMKW purchase was the made the day KLTV went off the air!  Maybe once the SMKW group gets hopping, I'll get inspired again.

And to be fair, I've only made one other knife purchase since then and the item I bought wasn't available at SMKW.  I need an intervention!

  • Tobias Gibson

Out of curiosity, has everyone got the January catalog yet?  Mine never came.  Last catalog I received was back in mid-December, well before Christmas.
