those are great pauls I have only one, a Gerber paul you can see it in my photos, and I found out just how sharp it is last night, the little bas#$%^&*@.
Ya know what -- I'm glad that you reminded me about the show down in Orange County -- I had completely forgot about it! Right now it doesn't look like I'll be going. But, that could change? So, I guess my answer is, no, I hadn't planned on it.
Nice work on your Knife Page! And congrats again on being featured. Did you get over to the show down your way a couple of weeks ago? Cheers, my friend!
Yo, Brad — very cool knives. I hafta' go poking around so I can learn something here. Saw a very strang wavy shaped blade ... off to explore! It was too small to be an axe, I think.
Hi Brad. I have a shop at Tru Grit Knifemaking Supplies where I do their heat treating and custom blade blanks. I am there weekdays 9-5. Feel free to stop by and visit me there on weekdays or at my Rancho Cucamonga shop on weekends.
thanks Brad...that western bowie has saved my butt one fall when I just moved to BC...kept me in fire wood for the night...my brother gave it to me when I was 12 years old
the old one and the Shrade underneath the Bowie...were my Dad's tools...I remember him using them every fall since I was about 8 years old...around forty years now..
The Marble knife I found in a box at a gun show a few years ago...15 dollar sweetie
Hey Brad, Sorry I took so long to get back to you, but navigating the pages here is still a bit of a challenge for this noob.
Thanks for the invite. I look forward to bumping into you over at your shop. I fear a tour would be a burden for you, but still, it would be a pleasure to meet and shake hands, and if there is any coffee left in the pot, well...
I am commenting on a post you made a year ago that I just read. About the Old Timer 510T. I just came across in my inventory a new in box 510T Pre-Production with letter of authenticity signed by Don Lewis. Just let me know if you have any interest and I will get you picks or talk with you. It has all the papers and needs a little cleaning (whitch I am doing). Leather poutch is emaculate.
Hey Brad! Thanks for the comment on my Ivory knife. Yea, Grand Leavitt makes some very nice blades. What I enjoy about his work is that I can send him my designs and he will turn them into blades that I can customize and build on to. His Spanish Lace is awesome, but I REALLY like his Spirograph Damascus. The pic below is my design that Grand made. The mosaic damascus is Eggerling that I modified and attached using 24k gold plated screws (Eggerling sells them or used to sell them). Mammoth was from Ron Burke in Ben Wheeler TX (he is a friend of mine). Most knives I have done were using Grand's blades as my RA doesn't let me swing a hammer any more.
Brad, You mentioned cost of something custom from Grand L.. I usually order a couple blades at a time from him and he doesn't charge me more. For example, are you familiar with the www.bayleyknife.com? I asked him for two of these in ATS34, hand forged and hardened. $75 each! or $150 for the pair. I still have one for another project. The spirograph knife with the mammoth and gems I designed and sent him the drawings and he made me 2 @ $115 each. Considering the spirograph damascus and the length of the blade, I think I did pretty well. His pricing with me has always been more than fair. :-)
Sent you a friend request as I didn't know how to accept the one you sent! Sam
Grand has been very fair with me and I enjoy doing business with him. I made his blades almost exclusively. The fun part is trying out new designs with him. I like Eggerlings mosaic damascus as well. Some of my bolsters are his including the pic I sent you. He also sells the gold screws I used. Are you making custom knives full time or did I read you work in a machine shop? Remember, if it takes X amount of energy to make a knife or to "handle knives", you might as well use the good stuff and make more money per knife. Grand can probably send you his file of designs for you to pick from. He also discounts for multiples. I didn't make the AKS, Jantz or TexasKnifeSupply knives very long. If you need someone who is ACES in stabalizing Mammoth Tooth and cutting slabs, let me know. I got a friend in Ben Wheeler TX who is the BEST. Sincerely, Sam
Better get my speach prepared! LOL. Wouldn't want the hall of fame to wait while I write one... But seriously folks, I make some pretty knives, but I don't think they are necessarily ground breaking. What did you think about my comments and theory that if you gonna build a knife anyway, and it takes the same energy to use Damascus steel as 440 stainless, but you make more $'s with the Damascus even if costs are a tiny bit higher, you may as well make the more expensive blade and cash in more? Damascus blades are just way more interesting! Have you ever set gems in your knives? Are you knives mostly to be used or displayed? Mine are really both until folks wanted gems set into the handles. Even the Mammoth tooth can work and not just look good.
Thanks for the invite Brad, I enjoy reading your posts here. I am going to try and collect all the LB series lock blades from Scrade and you would be a good resource. The LB7 I bought that you found is my first Scrade lock blade.
