I used to mess around with them every now and then when I was a kid. They're good fun and quite frustrating to get a good spin on sometimes.

before europeans were there  the Aboriginals used them  ( sharp ones ) as hunting weapons to catch wallabies.. sometimes made of stone  but also to impress other tribes

to catch a sharp one out of the air is no fun at all...  so the wooden ones with friendlier edges were more to show off      nowadays its more a sport  ( lonely mans frisbee)   most people dont know they were also used in ancient egypt !

if it is made well.. it really flies  !!

So in reality, was/is the boomerang a weapon, a hunting implement, or a toy?

hahahaha  true !!  Alexander..  but listen.. this boom belonged to my late mother in law AND MY WIFE SAID I AM NOT TO TROW THIS ONE !!

i have some modern ones though that i practiced with  ... but the idea is they DONT come back because you should hit the target !!   first they go straight and later they go up and back to base  ( left or right bepending on how you hold them when throwing )  they have a flat side and a convex side.. and if made properly a bit of a "twist"..... ah whatever    lets stick to knives  :-}
