Welcome Home...THANK YOU FOR BEING A PART OF OUR COMMUNITY

Though it seems like the proverbial "forever", I have fond memories of my involvement in the scouts. As a young buck, I was fortunate enough to have a Boy Scout Knife. For reasons that I no longer recall, I traded it off...and have regretted doing so ever since. Recently, I ran across an opportunity to pick up a US-made "Authentic Recreation". Indeed, the claim is that some of original tooling was used in the fabrication of the new release. In any event, I couldn't resist the urge to pick up one of these knifes...if nothing else, for the sake of nostalgia (yes, I've reached that stage in life).

The knife comes in a presentation "box" (cardboard, not wood). The artwork on the box is "period" and very well done. Inside the box, the knife is securely nestled in a molded plastic floor. With the knife comes a variety of interesting paperwork...including a poster-sized sampling of several "period" ads for this product.

As for the knife, it is reasonably well done...albeit far from "high quality". This little fun piece of steel wasn't expensive to score...so my expectations weren't real high. The overall fit and finish is "decent"...if a bit rough in spots. Perhaps my memory of my original Boy Scout Knife is foggy...but I seem to remember my original being better built than this. Don't get me wrong; this is far from "poor"...the snap is quite good and yet the blade and tools open fairly smoothly. The knife is decently sharp, though not shaving sharp (which is ok; I got this purely for collecting purposes). However, the back springs aren't tightly aligned (either horizontally or vertically).

Again, this is a USA made knife...so I hoped for a little better quality than what I actually received. I think...though I am not certain...that Bear & Son made this for Remington. Why? Well...the Bear & Son knives that I've experienced have decent quality...but certainly far from "great quality". I think that they tend to focus more on the lower-middle portion of the slip joint market. Their products always seem to really lack refinement and consistency.

That said, I'm very glad that I picked this up. It does bring my middle-aged mind back to a time when I was just a boy and the world was an exciting place...and certainly the Scouts were an important part of my early adventure.

Bear & Son has been making the USA made Remington's since the Camillus factory closed. I am getting these for my grandsons.
