Ron I checked out Englefield and it looks like a good place to visit. Trouble is it is too far down south ,they are foreign down there you know and speak a strange guttural sort of accent . I was foolish enough to go to London once ,around 1977 I think ,didn't like the place and haven't wanted to go back down there since .

It's not a bad trip out Jan as it is just down the road from where I live. It is far from being the best house that I have been to. When you come to the UK I will show you Powis Castle or one of the larger stately homes !

Powis castle is a great place to visit I really enjoyed going there a couple of years ago .

What a fascinating place!  I watched the video on them rebuilding the ceiling in the Gallery.  I would love to see that in person one day

Like you, I'm sure my quarters would be relegated to some dark dank corner of the basement. If not outside in the dog house or stable! And, ya know what? That is precisely where I would feel the most comfortable.

Ron it was built for the First Lord Bewick apparently though I doubt the old chap did much of the brick laying himself. 

We do a good line in grey and stark in these parts at this time of year ,though it's only grey from October to May except for the years when Summer is cancelled !

The thing about these old houses is that when you trundle through the servants dingy quarters I know that that is where I would have been, had I been around then .

Cool pic, John!

At first glance it looked quite like a similar structure that was in an "X Men First Class" movie that I was watching just last night.

I agree! The heating of such a monster would be a terribly costly chore. Silhouetted against that ominously gray sky and stark landscape, I shiver just looking at it. Perhaps it's just my taste but it doesn't look very inviting.

For whom was this hovel built? Poor souls must have been horribly impoverished.
