Spruce would be good as well as maple and cherry. Red cedar would look good as well. Good luck and keep the tradition alive.

Welcome, Jacob! We have many similar interests. Check out my Randall Made Knives group if you're interested, and maybe you'd consider adding a story to the Stories group. See you around-- oh yeah, 50 years ago I wove mats from palms like the one in your photo, and we sat on them and used them for plates. Looks like the "palmetto" in Texas and Louisiana.
