i use 1095 high carbon steel on all my knives. its a good durable steel that is not too expensive so i can keep the cost of the knife down.
i am currently working on a O1 tool steel version of the Ironclad. i really like the O1 steel. its easier to grind, and is more stain resistant than 1095, but it cost more.
As for the style of knives that I make. I like to experiment a little with shapes, techniques, materials etc. In every knife I try to put something that I haven't done before. It adds a lot to my learning process.
Thanks for the comment onmy knives Sthphen! I made the pocket knife for myself, cary it everywhere I go. I still have the other one too. It has a maple Burl handle and the blade is sawblas steel. Thanks again, Mike
Jantz knifemaking supply has two in their catalog for around 100.00 dollars. They are called the Electrochem personalizer...
Personalizer Plus" Power Unit Very popular in the cutlery and custom knife-making industry, the Personalizer Plus is an electro chemical etching machine ideal for low volume metal marking applications. It’s no wonder that tens of thousands of these units have been sold to knife makers, gunsmiths, and medical instrument manufacturers worldwide. With 72 watts of power and variable output voltages of O-20, this popular model produces high contrast markings in just a few seconds. If medium power–with reliability and high performance- all in a very affordable package, are your requirements, the Personalizer Plus is the perfect unit for you.
That's my farm and thanks! I find those arrowheads in my gardens all the time that's right beside my house and I find some in my yard during winter. I built my house on an old camp ground but I didn't find that out until I had the area Bulldozed and they started pushing dirt around. I plowed up two garden spots 50' x 75' real good, then tillered and started finding grinding stones, Spear points, bird points, skinning tools, and tons of flint chips everywhere. I find 3 to 5+ arrowheads, tools, knives, etc... per year just depending how hard or often I go out and look. I normally find them a few days after a good rain or when the Moon the up during the day, they just seem to pop right out at you during those times. It's funny how it works that way but I can go out looking for days without any luck and then find 3 or 4 in one day during a Full Moon that's straight up during med day! After a good rain the garden just glidders with fint chips everywhere. I picked up every piece one year and put in 5 gal buckets, I ended up with 4 5 gal buckets full before I decided to stop and it looks like I didn't even pick up a single piece after a good rain. LOL Send me an email: terrytruettsr@yahoo.com and will see about getting you a few Points!!
Thanks for the nice comments on my knives Stephen. They are for sure a lot of fun to collect. Just nice to be in a place where so many of us appreciate such fine things.
Stephan-I'd love to get a camera suitable for close ups & forward pics of all my knives including that Randall Model 5 I recently purchased but I've been so busy with yard maintenance & other chores lately, I just can't find time. It's coming eventually though.
I still love Buck, Case & Canal Street Cutlery is another fine mfg., but Randall makes one helluva fine blade that seems to out do everything I've owned before. I still carry my Buck Stockman everyday though.
Hi Stephen, I use an Electroetch Machine to put my name onn the blades. It uses a stencel and acid along with electric to burn the name into the steel. You can get one from Jantz Supply for around $300, Thanks Mike
