most are going to work pretty good but in my own experance i like to use a light my fire swedish fire steel (army model) make sure you get the army model and not the scout model. the army one of only like 5 dollars more but your getting way more for you maney and with the scout model and other thinner ones they are mush more likely to break in half
I'm a huge fan of the LMF Firesteels. I put together a couple short videos. The "Reality Challenge" came after a customer asked me to demonstrate lighting a fire without any 'artificial' kindling, i.e. vaseline cotton balls, etc. As I use the FireSteels all the time when camping, I was glad to oblige!!
I like my BSA fire steal the best. I also try different tender to see what works but usually fall back on cotton. I did find a good supply of fat wood when camping in Colorado a few years ago.
I can make fire with a bow drill but should practice more.
I use flint and steel with cotton that has been turned in to charcoal and tender is sisel rope pulled apart for the strands to be loose I carry it in a leather pouch all together I have been doing mountain man reenactments for 30 yrs plus I have been able to start a fire in less then a min in a contest at rendezvous during these rendezvous nothing modern is allowed so I have learned to start fires in this method and it seems to work every time
method
1 you put your charcoal pc on top of the tender
2 strike your steel with the flint get spark on charcoal
3 blow on the charcoal and tender bingo you have fire
4 lay on your small wood and blow till you have good fire then add wood as it is needed small pcs first then go larger till u have a good fire
OK I HAVE THIS QUESTION FOR ALL TO ANSWER WHERE DO YOU FIND DRY WOOD IN A RAIN STORM CANNOT BE FROM YOUR POCKET OR PACK JUST FOUND WOOD FROM WHERE YOU ARE ?????????????????????
Awesome technique and pix. We use core of rotten pine tree, call it "pitch pine" for the resin content. Took my wife to the woods on first date, rainy cool November back in 1967, put up a little pancho shelter, made fire with pitch pine. she thought I was cool! Primitive stuff levels out the head. Gets us in touch with our ancient forefathers.
I have a vid on my page using magnifying glass to start fire.
In a rain storm dry wood can still be aquired by finding some dead branches sitting under a tree you then need to remove the wet bark and maybe a thin layer or wood under the bark but the core will be dry and rich in resin. Thats what I've done.
