Jay,

I am not as up on swords as I probably should be, do they usually come with the smaller knife and is that for close in fighting?

the tanto and wakisashi are smaller made for indoors, katana was to large and often not welcome in homes but they carried smaller knives for defense, so usually there are 3 together
