I'm looking for a clearing tool for small hardwood branches (1/4"), up to maybe 1".

The woodsman is a great tool that I think might fit my bill, but its a bit larger than i would like. Really the weight.

I would use it mostly to clear the small sticks while making a path before season, but I plan on using it to clear small limbs for a climbing tree stand. Thats where the weight and bulk would be a factor.

Any other suggestions?

How about a sugar cane machete?

Ben,

My suggestion would be a hatchet - one of the ones with a hammer head on the other end - so it would fit in a hammer loop.  The Estwing type hatchets wouldn't have enough purchase on a hammer loop (either all leather or metal loop) to stay secure.  Excellent for limbing, but not clearing brush.  You might consider a BIG knife, not a machete, but a big knife, such as a Cold Steel Trailmaster, but it's more expensive than an old hickory handled hatchet you might already have or a Woodsman's Pal.

I bought a Woodsmans Pal a couple of years ago, you can't beat it for your purposes, buy the longer one!

I just use a machete - it works for me.

Thanks guys!
