Knife trivia- Feel free to answer or post a new challenge--

I'll start with an easy one- You probably all have seen this tang stamp or a variation there of on a Remington knife- What does UMC stand for??

A little tougher one- What famous author mentioned a particular style knife in two of his most famous works and helped make the knife famous ?? Name the author and / or the knife ??

I know the basics of W.R. Case & Sons as I don't collect them, but I take umbrage at the statement of "the most collectible knife in the world".

I've read that the Case Collectors Club is about 20,000 strong (and MAY be the largest club of its kind) and that the company in its various incarnations has been around since 1889 so there are plenty of knives available to collect--both in numbers and patterns.

Case, when it did change hands (numerous times) always did so with a strong leadership in the new company and since 1993 Zippo Lighter Company owns them.

Could one of the reasons Case survived be that as so many of the other US companies closed up or went overseas it just left a lot less competition for Case especially for US made knives?

The "Great Depression" killed a lot of the industry for small time makers as their steel suppliers closed down and of course they had no one to sell to...Only the strong companies survived--W.R. Case, Union Cutlery/Ka-Bar, Camillus, Cattaraugus Cutlery Co., Robeson (ShurEdge) Cutlery Co., Ontario Knife Co., etc..Four of the six mentioned are still around although Camillus has been resurrected from the ashes and the others have undergone numerous ownership/directorship changes...Of the four, only Case is all USA made.

But Case has dabbled in off shore production and Case has also changed ownership over the years!

That's what I thought but according to W.R. Case support site:

Are all Case knives made in the United States?

Yes. Case Cutlery remains committed to handcrafting each and every knife in the United States. The majority of our knives are made in Bradford, PA, where Case has been manufacturing cutlery for over a century.

Shlomo that is what they say but they have made knives in Germany in the past and they currently make their Tek-X knives in China. I guess technically that is a different brand but it is made by Case! We also won't go into the Case-Camillus connection. And the MS Ltd XX knives that were made in a Case owned Canadian factory!

Was looking through some old woodcuts and look what I found. A bunch of tools and a pocket knife sitting right in the middle.Looks like it has a scimitar and spey blade.

Trivia question: What kind of tools are these?

Robeson was made in the Queen Factory until 5 years ago. It is not being made at this time.

Ontario knife company is in New York and Made in the USA
