I suppose it could just be the metals used in the knives, Charles.  I'm thinking something a little more nefarious, like adhesives or lubricants or sealants.  Though running with Jan's idea a little farther, we might not lick our knives, but we might use them to cut foods, especially acidic ones like citrus or tomatoes, & that could corrode some of those carcinogens into the food we're eating or giving to our kids.

To really know, it's best to ask Rough Rider directly.  I'm getting too curious, might have to do it myself.

Where are those Rough Rider knives made, anyway?

The Rough Riders are made in China.  I don't know the factory but they are a SMKW house brand so it might be possible to get something through them.

Funny how no one has yet complained that the warning sticker screws up a perfectly good box.  I realize that it's a Rough Rider, and collecting value isn't high, but what happens when the labels get put on the box of a collectable?

So far Rough Rider is the only brand I have gotten the label with.  But they just put the label in the box with the knife rather than sticking it on the box.

J. J., I did get a Rough Rider box with a label on it but it was not put there by the factory.  It was apparently put there by the vendor I bought the knife from.  And they stuck it in just about the worst possible place, right in the center of the top of the box.  Messed up a really nice box.  And it was stuck on too tight to get off without messing up the box even more.  So I just left it on.

I have bought several knives from Shepherd Hills Cutlery.  They stick price labels on the boxes but at least they stick them in the corner of the box.

You are very right and I did not think about the fact that we use these to cut fruit on a regular basis !  Good thought!

Here is the reply to the email I sent to SMKW about the warning labels I found in my Rough Rider knife boxes.  It doesn't really tell us anything we didn't already know.

Mr.Sample, 
                    The warning labels are something we have to inform our customer when purchasing products that is being shipped or sold to California. The State of California has a law that has a list of substance that might cause cancer or harm the reproductive system if enough of the chemical is ingested ,inhaled,or otherwise taken into the body. Any product offered for sale in the State of California that contains one or more of the substance on the list must include the warning label so that the consumer can make an informed decision.These labels are fairly common because companies are now placing the labels on their products even when sold in states other than California. The warning labels can be found on many kinds of products, such as electrical wires,jewelry,padlocks,dishes,flashlight and pesticides just to name a few. I hope this has answered your question.

The state of California has a "Better safe than sorry" attitude toward any substance remotely connected to Cancer. Which is why it is so difficult to manufacture anything in California. My company must post on our doorways that Sawdust from wood products we on process onsite causes Cancer. I use 4 species of wood for the tools we manufacture, Sugar Pine from the Pacific Northwest(float handles), Eastern Poplar(darbie handles) and Meranti, which is a an Asian variant of Mahogany for bullfloats.

For the most part all the Libtards have made manufacturing in California expensive and ill-advised. I suppose it is one way to reduce the Illegal immigration that is rampant in this state. Because, if all the manufacturers leave the state the only jobs left will be Tech jobs and farming. The average undocumented worker will not apply for a tech job nor does he want to do the back breaking farm labor job that his grandfather did to support his family decades ago.

IMO California goes far beyond reasonable in most things.  If all manufacturers left California and all companies quit selling in California, that would greatly reduce the cancer risk there.  But I wonder how the liberals would like their liberal utopia then?  I think it would be a similar situation to a cartoon I once saw.  In the first frame a hippie character is holding a sign that said "No Nukes".  In the second frame a character was holding a sign that said "No Coal Plants".  The sign in the third frame said "No Dams".  The fourth frame was black with a text bubble that said "What happened to the lights?"
