I have been doing this for about five years now. The problem is I think everyone else caught wind, I rarely find the good ol carbon steel ones in the second hand stores anymore. I have to go to more yard and garage sales.

Oh Yea

We have a set in our kitchen! They do sharpen up really well. This stuff is coming back. I saw a pretty beat up old hickory at the knife show and the guy wanted $40.00 for it. I too buy these from the local second hand stores and re-do the blades and replace the handles when needed and I give them out as Christmas gifts for family. Everyone loves a good sharp knife!! Probably made between the early 60's and mid 70's

Yuppers .. they're great knives.

Not much to look @ ..but.. great steel & very functional.

I managed a couple from the local Salvation Army for next to nothing. One of those now serves as a gardening tool .. I call it my "mini machete". It literally takes a beating & just comes back for more.

I'm thinking of using the other for the basis of a friction folder.

Those older OLD HICKORY knives could take a beating and keep right on being a great knife!
