WANTED ... Doctor's Knife ..or.. Physicians Knife ... WANTED

I'm looking for a Doctor's Knife.

Preferably .. a Case Baby Doc ..or.. a Queen # 96S.

The spatula blade is preferred ..but.. not absolutely necessary.
.
Here's the kicker .... I need it with wood scales.

That's a necessity .. no option on that.
.
I've found one ..but.. the shield design & other embellishments have made it ..well.. not so desirable.

.

SO00oooooo .. what's out there ???

.

!!! .. Thank you .. !!!

Thanks, Jan .. the prototype unit might do it.

.

Abby's expressed a desire for a knife ..specifically.. a doctor's knife. She's mixing pigments in very small quantities. I pulled out mine .. a Kinsfolk (by Queen for Case) .. a couple Queen std # 96 .. a couple Case .. a Case Baby Doc ..&.. the 2 A.G. Russell Small Doctor's knives to show her what was available.

.

The A.G.Russell came out on top with the Case Baby Doc a close second.

... BUT ...

Wooden scales are a requirement.

.

I figured I could find a Queen # 96S in Birdseye Maple somewhere ..but.. no such luck. I spent a couple hours scouring the net .. with no luck. It's not often (in fact .. it's pretty rare) that Ab asks for a knife .. SO0oooo .. the hunt is on !!!

This one isn't American made but I came across it while browsing the internet so I thought i'd pass it along  http://www.americanedgeknives.com/schrade-378/schrade-doctor-s-knif...

Thanks , Doug !!!

.

American made ..or.. not ------------- does not matter to me. e.g. I also have a couple Frost Doctor's Knives that I showed her for comparison.

.

I believe the Schrade imports are about the same ..or.. very similar to .. Rough Riders. Which .. are a big step up from the Frost .. imo. In fact .. based on what I've observed .. I suspect the Schrade imports & Rough Riders come out of the same production facility.

.

Given .. this will be a user i.e. It's not going in my collection .. it will never leave the house .. it will be kept in the area where actually used .. it will literally be a "tool" ......... function takes precedence over form.

.

Since this will quite literally be a tool .. my wife is reluctant to spend the $ I often do fulfilling my passion (collection).

.

Abby is currently using my A.G.Russell in smooth white bone as "proof of concept" .. to see if it actually fulfills the purpose she wishes to implement it in.
.

I'll show her the Schrade later when she's up for the day. Given, it's Sunday .. she's sleeping in a bit.

.
Thanks again, Doug .. it may just "fit the bill".

I like the Dr's knives too and for the life of me, couldn't think of any with wood handles. You just never know what you'll stumble across while looking for knives late at night. Picked up this little Robeson by Queen just awhile back. I'm real partial to the blue bone and the jigging was just too good to pass up.

Thank you .. Jan & Doug.

.

Here's what we've decided to do.

Abby just ordered one of these .. a Remington made by Bear & Son.

I'll remove the scales & replace with wood when it arrives.

.

Abby currently carries (somewhere in her purse .. I have no idea how you girls find anything in there .. she can ask me to retrieve something & I'm @ a total loss ..then.. she'll reach in without looking & retrieve said item ..but.. I digress) a Peanut by Bear & Son ..&.. is happy with the edge holding of the blade steel.

.

Although I've not personally experienced an issue .. Bear & Son has something of a reputation for hit-n-miss fit-n-finish. I'll be responsible for the final fit-n-finish of this one.

.

It turns out .. the feature Abby is most interested in is the pill buster ..&.. did a proof of concept this afternoon using my A.G. Russell in Smooth White Bone. The pill buster end is machined perfectly flat on this unit. I cannot say the same for either the Case or the Queen models I own. It will be on the Remington (Bear & Son) when I am finished.

.

This will be the first scale replacement I've performed on a pinned factory knife. All the times in the past have been using threaded fasteners where I could completely dis-assemble the knife. This time .. I'll only be machining away & removing the center backspring pin .. the others (fnt & rear bolster pins) will remain intact. I'll then machine the wood to fit .. lengthwise. I'll then use the existing liners / frame to accurately transfer the pin hole. Somewhere in the process .. I'll machine the pill buster perfectly flat & seamless. I'll then epoxy & pin the scales in place ..then.. the final fit-n-finish.

.

So is the plan ..........................

.

I'll post it all over in the Repair & Modifications Group.
.

Thanks again  .. Jan & Doug ..  for your responses.

Also

!!! .. Nice Robeson, Doug .. !!!

.

You're right .. the jigging is phenomenally unique.

I too like the blue ..&.. have a soft spot for Case's Caribbean Blue.

D ale, I doubt that we are the only ones that like the blue knives. I just started a group, if it's approved, for *Blue* Bones and Acrylics. I've don't have a Case in Caribbean Blue, although I have my eye on one, but I do have a Cheetah in Kentucky Bluegrass.

Looking forward to seeing the finished product.

Looking forward to the "Blue Group" , Doug.

The first knife I ever got Abby was a Case 61154 SS in Caribbean Blue.

I've a # of Case (copperlock , mini copperlock, congress, etc) in the Caribbean Blue that I'll post to help get the grp going.

and

never fear, approval is merely a formality.

i.e. We once had a member .. who enjoyed just stirring things up & is no longer here .. that started a grp concerning "coprophagia" over in the iKC Dogs group .. just to start sht. It was around that time that formal approval became a requirement.

.

Looking forward to the "Blue Group" & will definitely contribute.

.

Speaking of which .. thanks for your contribution here !! The Schrade ALMOST got ordered. Then I found the Remington (Bear & Son) & decided to do the scale replacement myself. I've a # of Bear & Son's product & have always been happy with the quality vs price ratio , i.e. I've always felt I've gotten more than I paid for w/ Bear & Son's product.

.

Enjoy your day.

D ale,

Bear and Sons had a hand in getting me started with knife collecting. I was looking for a Schrade Sharpfinger and had no idea that Schrade had gone bankrupt. I was in a sporting goods store and grabbed a clam pack with what I assumed was a Sharpfinger....turned out to be made by Bear. When I looked on the internet and saw all the new and vintage knives for sale...that was the beginning of my knife collecting addiction. I'm looking forward to seeing your Remington and the blue Cases. I like that name..."Blue Group"...some folks might get the wrong idea with "Blue Bones".

The Blue Group is approved!  Looking forward to seeing them!!

Dale, I love it!  Not every lady tells her husband "I want a knife", not every husband takes it seriously when they do.  To have you honor that request with a customized to fit her specif needs is AWESOME!!  I cannot wait to see it and see how it performs for her!
