Serious question . . . if you had one knife to defend yourself with when things go bump in the night (not talking about EDC in this post) what knife would it be?  Would you want a Ninja Sword?  A large blade like a Junglas, RTAK II, or maybe a Buck Hoodlum?  I am going to assume that most of us don't have martial arts training in swordsmanship.  Just opening up the conversation, I'd really like to know about all of those knife choices out there.

That should do the job Manx!

Agreed with the previous sentiment of bladed objects being a highly unfavorable choice for self-defense.  Knives mean blood-letting, good chance you'll shed some blood too.  If someone's attacking you, what's the likelihood they have engaged in other risky behaviors in their lives, including unprotected sex or IV drug use?  If their blood's going to be all over you, & possibly in your wound -- this has got to be an absolute last-ditch thing.

That said, tomahawks & hatchets have all sorts of non-lethal options -- as well as clubbing options.  A single-edged machete also has significant pain-inducing, non-lethal options, & frankly would be especially intimidating (even small machetes are big knives).  The machete is also incredibly light -- but in the adrenaline-laden CQC scenario, I'm not sure this is an advantage (but it might be, I don't know knife fighting other than to avoid it at nearly all costs).

Regardless, 'hawks are heavy, machetes are light, & both are scary enough to hopefully avert the fight.  (Haha!  See what I did there?!?  Yeah, that's it, alright.)

I certainly would not choose to be without a boom stick for home defense, I was thinking hypothetically, what would everyone's choice be for a sharp object.

Manx - what is that???

I designed the Defensive Battle Hawk for last-ditch home defense, although it has proven a practical camp accessory as well -

I might also consider this baby, which I just received from Busse Combat - The War Train Fusion. It is a beast.

That is of course hypothetically considering that the intruder would be able to penetrate the perimeter before I could get to my preferred go-to defensive piece.

Viking Raider

Specs:

Blade Length: 7" Weight: 8 oz.

Blade Thickness: ?" Sheath: Leather

Overall Length: 15" Blade Steel: Aus8

Rc: 57-59

The Viking Raider was designed by both Ken Warner and Mike Stewart. The handle is the same as that of the Marauder. Of course it was used on several of the other models as well. In my view this is a very comfortable handle and surely it made sense to utilize these on several models from a cost stand point. According to Mike Stewart these were quite popular. There were about 1500 - 2000 of these produced.

I agree, I will avoid a knife fight if at all possible.  If I can't, my machete should look very imposing to the other fellow.  But in reality I am always armed.  So if someone pulls a knife on me, I am pulling a gun while I try to put something between me and him.

I offered my wife a long wwII machette but she said no I want one of those shotguns that goes cha chick, ( or sound like that) lol, she would rather have a pump shotgun, smart woman.

I myself would select a well made kukuri. Thousands of Gurkha soldiers can't be wrong !!! (LOL)  Actually, the kukuri is a very deadly chopping and slashing weapon, and a very versatile knife for more pedestrian everyday tasks, and is found in almost every Nepalese household. Its design delivers far more force than its length would suggest, and is quite capable of removing one's head or arm with a single blow .In addition, the average Gurkha soldier is only about 5'3" or 5'4", so you needn't be a behemoth to use one with devastating results.

I agree that a well made Kukuri is a formidable weapon.  Legend has it the Nepalese can remove a goats head with one swing..

I've got a good Kukuri, never used it for anything but it would probably be a good choice.  Maybe I should assault a small tree to get a feel for it.

simple question for me....

A BIG MACHETE  will do the trick !!

chopping is much more effective than stabbing if you are on the defense

and just showing it could be enough !!.....

Well Ms. Data.....I asked my husband this question.......and he said " A big knife" Probably a bowie......or a crocodile dundee KNIFE....rofl.....he said.....reminding me of the movie where he compared his knife with a mugger.....rofl...

but for me.....if the gun was not available.....it would have to be a machete  .................at least I have had some experience with one of them on numerous occasions.......
