Good day to all,

Just found your site today, and have a question that probably has been kicked around repeatedly, so forgive my redundancy.

I have amassed quite a number of pocket knives -- perhaps as many as two-hundred. Many are Chinese mfg. knives, with stunning tin case art, and a large number of Schrade Classic knives, and many more. I would like to hear what many of you have done to display your knives in wall mounted cases -- and affordable to an 'ole man with shallow pockets!

I've tried the inexpensive black cardboard type cases with glass fronts, and ostensibly the collectibles held in place by foam type material. They don't work

Is there anyplace, or anyone, who sells plans to build a basic, no frills case. I struggle with the enormous variation in sizes -- from close to an inch or so to four or five inches, and would like to include the "presentation cases" for display.

Would appreciate any input. I am stumpted!

Lloyd .. I use "type setting" boxes. I fill the little itty bitty sq slots w/ old razor blades. But .. that's just me !!!

With the size ranges that you listed, you might be better off with a floor standing curio cabinet of sorts.

Thanks for the thought. Yes, I believe a standing cabinet will be the only way to display my knives. A major part of my "kinfe pleasure" is admiring them and handling them easily and frequently.

My quandry is its' disign.. I've considered shelves, set at an angle (?), with perhaps one entire row, for my tiny knives, with milled dimples, to set them on end, wood dowels separating the compartments. Other shelves, for knives three inches to five or six, perhaps, might rest on second, third. or maybe even more shelves; commonality of sizes would dictate shelf size.

Would be wonderful to filnd somebody who has fought the dragon and has his carcass on the barn door! Would be great to find a company already having such an animal in their inventory.

But these are only my thoughts, and I'm just about as far away from desing work as my Beagles -- though my youngest son in an aerospace engineer in Houston, and when they fly, he is twelve on and twelve off. Defilnitely on the fast track. Gets it all ffom his Mom!

Howdy Lloyd,

I don't wish to toot my own horn, but I do make such things. But it 'pears you are not looking to spend money, so let me offer some free advice on free solutions.

It depends on the size of your collectible items, but Riker mounts ("black cardboard type cases with glass fronts, and ostensibly the collectibles held in place by foam type material"), work great for a lot of uses. If you find your knives sliding down, try a big old carpet needle, some mono-filament fishing line, a ;iece of corrugated cardboard as a backing, and some carefully selected fabric to provide a nice background. (Ask your wife to pick out something in t5he direction.) Then what'chu do, is "sew" your knives to the backing and mount jt it all up again.

If this don't ger 'er done, make your self some cardboard divided drawer liners. These will allow you to deal with "enormous variation in sizes -- from close to an inch or so to four or five inches" and are stronger than you might guess. You end up with something like Dale's excellent but scarce suggestion for "typesetting drawer"

...for the how-to in this direction. You will, however, need to get all fancy with fabric to make it look good. Beyond this, you had best have a table saw in your garage, or have a friend who does. Let me know if you are so equipped and I can offer other suggestions.
