I actually own five U.S. Classic knives.  I knew they were made in China because I asked the person who was selling them where they were made.  As I needed them for part of my growing white bone collection, I was willing to take a chance. 

It was later on that I read all the negative stuff about them being passed off as USA made.   Quite frankly the quality of them falls close to  a Rough Rider if not equal to it.  I got them on eBay for under $10 and am satisfied with all of them.  I was especially happy when I finally landed the white smooth bone  Bartender's knife with the Whiskey bottle shield  It was the only wsb bartender I could find.  It is in the same pattern as the RR bartenders for the various "Support the Causes." only with plain bolsters.

 

Yep, there are dealers who try to pass them off as American made, but that is a reflection on the seller, not the product.  Caveat Emptor.

 

I have the:

imitation (read plastic) Tiger Eye Congress

White smooth bone (WSB) baby barlow

WSB Half whittler with wharncliffe blade

WSB traditional whittler

WSB bartender

 

I've used the congress on several occasions and have been satisfied with the results.  I assume the others cut and operate just as well  but honestly I bought them to stick in the WSB collection.

I don't know if the Rough Rider factory would do a small run. I think they like to do runs of 1500, although I have seen some with only 500. It might be worth talking to Steve Koontz about, or maybe Kevin Pipes.I would go along with a Toenail/sunfish pattern with a wharnecliffe blade.

Hi guys, I'm new around here, but not to knife collecting. Been collecting for over 35 years, and I've own every type and every brand. I really have to say I was completely blown away when I bought my first Rough Rider knives a couple of months ago! I am now collecting Rough Riders exclusively! They have me completely hooked!

 

As for the steel, which I believe is 440A.....waaay back when Schrade, Camillus, Case and most other knife companies were using it, no one seemed the least bit bothered about it. As far as it being Chinese 440A, well, I've been using Rough Riders for my main using knives and I have to say they hold an edge as good as, or better than, any other factory knife (Schrade - before they went out of business, Camillus - before they went out of business, Case, etc) I've ever used. The Rough Rider that I'm now carrying holds a good bit better edge than the Case knife that I switched from!

Thanks Tom! I did a lot of re-handling back in the 80's and 90's, I wish Rough Rider was around back then! I haven't been so addicted to a knife brand since the 80's when I was collecting Schrades!

RR build some very interesting patterns But we have to thank Smokey Mountain Knife Works & Blue Ridge Wholesale - They own RR & I guess they know bettern than anyone what the public is buying.

 

I quit building handmade knives about 4 years ago & stopped re-handling knives this year - did it for 30 plus years - tired of eating the dust & having a dirty shop -

I've been away from collecting for a number of years now, but I was VERY involved starting back in the 70's going through the 80's and 90's. I knew your name sounded familiar!

I had my 15 minutes years ago - I worked Gun & Knife shows all over the US for many years - All the big ones & a bunch of small ones - In the 70's & 80's I could get on an airplane with 4 knife rolls with 80 knives in each roll as a carry on as long as the blades were under 4 inches but they never measured a blade - Times have changed.
