Jemal....I have tried to figure how to do the repairs myself, but on these old knives, simply taking them apart without damaging them appears hopeless.  Next week, I am going to try and find a local machinist who might help.It would appear that there is quite an extensive market for repair, so it is possible that I could convince someone that it might be worth their while to learn how to do it.  My primary concern is destroying the knife in the process!!  Many of the old outer skin (scale) materials are not available, and substituting a different material would devalue the knife.  So, without the ability to "save" the old material, the repair is useless.  The materials inside the knife would be much easier to reproduce because those parts will not be seen.  Some of the old outer skin (scale) material has experienced significant shrinkage which would have to be taken into consideration....so, modification for that shrinkage would require additional fabrication.  After all this,  I wonder if it would be financially feasible to attempt such refabrication.

He's right here, he makes nice knives too. I'd seen his website a couple of weeks ago but was wondering if /what else there was, had anybody worked with him or anybody else. He seems to really care about knives and not ripping anybody off - quote from his page about vintage switch repair just below

I will not swap parts between knives to make a common knife into something very rare. Anything that requires disassembly gets my MM mark stamped discreetly inside the left liner so if anyone is curious about a knife they can glance in there and see if it has ever been apart in my shop.

He makes pretty nice knives too, at least the pics on his site seem good. I'm assuimg that the muskratman seller id at sharper deals is him too, 100% feedback rating

I remember that your name had come up before;  in fact, I was on your site some time ago and you reiterated your "exceptions" list...which just happened to be the knives I had been collecting that needed repair i.e., colonial SHUR SNAP,  hammer brand, etc. These knives are beautiful knives and deserve the ability to stand the stress of time.  I believe you indicated that they were not well made or at least inferior to other brands.  I would propose to send you several of these knives for reworking.  And if they fall apart while redoing, so be it....at my loss!  These knives were produced in substantial quantities and I would think that, to save these knives, other owners would feel this to be a worthwhile undertaking.....especially since they are American made!!

I would be interested in your response.

Kaleb, well said.  I think perhaps that I was simply frustrated knowing that no valid repair existed for these knives!  Because of the nostalgic nature of the knives, I am going to continue to collect them until I earn the dubious honor of having more broken American switchblades than anyone else.

Thank you for the response, and I certainly understand your trepidation to deal with these knives......honesty is always the best policy.  Thank you for being frank!

The older knives are tough !!!

I've at least a dozen  "bagged units"  in pcs as a result ... "dubious honor"  ...  perhaps ?!?

I use these folks for parts for newer auto's .. never a bad experience w/ em either !!! They also supply knives for DIY conversion's .. although, I've never tried those. I have tried a few of their folder kits ..and.. was pleased !!!

I've also sourced some parts from here ........... only one order, but ...  no neg issues !!!

I'd say that a pretty fantastic little deal there Chuck. I really like worn out busted little knives sometimes, least they did something aside from sit on a shelf.

(not that I don't droool over the cherry ones, just I like the beat ones too)

We should make a t-shirt, I know some people who could work up a busted switchrest home logo. Would be cool.

Why don't we all just contribute our broken switches to one central location and then they could be donated to the poor?

 

By the way, I go by "Rollie", not Chuck, Charles, etc.  I can't figure out how to change this on my profile listing!

No keep your busted bruised and limp switches, I don't know if I'd want any (when I get them) in the hands of strangers who might not understand my attachment.

The t-shirt is a good idea, I'm going to start some picture research for the logo.
