I figure I should chime in now.

Over-hyped or over produced: Stockmans & Trappers (Not that I don't like both patterns a lot, but they are over produced)

Under Appreciated - Medium Barehead Jacks.

Yea, I think I got off on the wrong subject at the beginning of this conversation. [ That happens to me some times] What I meant about some patterns is they were "over populated" not over hyped. Brad, you are very correct, a Trapper and Stockman have earned their spot as a  great user knives all over the world, for a long time. Excuse me, old guy like me, some times puts mouth in gear before brain...lol

Well its not a pattern but it is a name we have seen talked about significantly, Titanium! Seems we have MANY knives with Titanium from expensive down to inexpensive knives. I think it may be in danger of becoming an over used  name.

When everyone goes around saying that the "trapper" is the most collected pattern I think it is a case of over-hype. I sweat it is like the knife makers are telling me I'm an idiot if I don't buy trappers.  I like the basic 4 1/8 inch frame but i have no use for that big honkin' spay blade.  The reason it is the most collected is because factories produce every commemorative collectors knife on a trapper frame. And every series of knives includes a trapper, which is normally the first of the series to come out.  the pattern is over-populated and over-promoted by the knife makers.  When it comes to knives I prefer the
ABAT (anything but a trapper)

Steve you are so right on Titanium.  I still don't understand how a titanium coating is going to help with edge retention, considering when you sharpen the knife you have removed the coating. I can see how it might protect the rest of the blade but not the cutting edge.  And yes i do own one with knife with a Carbonitride Titanium blades.  (actually it is AUS8 with the CT coating.  Camillus claims These blades are 10x harder than untreated steel and will stay sharper for a longer period of time, while resisting rust, stains and corrosion.  Who knows how much of that is true and how much is advertising hype!

The trick with the titanium coated knives was when you only sharpened ONE side. Buck did this for a while and they clearly instructed users to only sharpen one side.

I agree with the Titanium hype. A titanium coating or any other "COATING" is just that, a coating of the surface. Gold and silver plating will eventually wear away given enough use and handling. It will wear away faster when you grind it away. I own one titanium coated knife, a Colt Trapper. I didn't buy it to see how long the edge would last or how well it repells rust. I bought it for the looks. I agree with Tobias that it will resist rust and corrosion. That does not mean it will never rust because the factory has already sharpened the edge and thereby removed the coating from the edge and that is where rust will begin. Now make a knife blade from 100% titanium and then we can talk about durability, longevity, and price. As far as sharpening only one side, I don't see this doing anything other than offsetting the edge. How would a titanium coating make this different? I also agree with Steve that this term is being over done. Some people are beginning to get the idea that titanium is indestructable. While it's not the manufacturers fault for people not becoming educated, it does seem they are all jumping on the same bandwagon.

If it is a tactical folder

and the description begins with a "Survival" -- it might be over-hyped

if it has a goofy integrated seat-belt cover and glass breaker -- it might be over-hyped

if it is "spring assisted" -- it might be over-hyped

I agree with you on the Scout knife being under appreciated. I also agree on the Barlow One of my top tens for sure.

i will have to think about the over - hyped  .... lol   i was typing muskrat,  then i see where you mentioned it....I actually own a limited edition  4 blade muskrat  !!!  lol  .. ok..it was an impulse buy!!   lmbo      i believe i agree with the barlow as most under appreciated tho...not just grandaddy either..All barlows....very few produced compared to other styles...and it was my first knife i ever owned!  i carried it till the slabs fell off..and then kept carrying it till i lost it many years later!  oh btw..if you've even been camping for long periods....most under-appreciated..{scouts knife}
