At certain times, you need a certain knife. What are some instances when you were under knifed, over knifed or needed a certain knife?

When in Alaska, a Grizzly Bear thought I was threatening his food, he lunged at me, then stopped. It was a bluff charge, he was telling me get away. What if he would have kept coming? What knife should I have had? I probably had a pocket knife which the bear would have laughed at. My choice would have been a KaBar fighting knife.

Well first off, that bear lunges and I would have been on the dead run and "dead run" is probably a good way to describe it as the bear could probably catch me in about 30 seconds!

My next thought and probably my last would be ...what knife do I have?

We have the small black bears here and generally they stay away but every so often in the spring you see a young one come up by the creek. You have to watch carefully though any sudden moves and I guarantee that momma bear will come out charging!

LOL!  I would prefer the KaBar also but honestly, I would have dropped dead right there anyway

I started to run, but remembered if you run they will run you down, so I turned around and stopped and he stopped at the same time - a Mexican standoff, I slowly moved off.

Steve, what Knife?

I would want my Swamp knife, it's 15" long. I don't think I would stand and fight a Grizzly Bear, though.

Davy Crockett kilt him a bar when he was only 3.

Well if I were in that situation, of the knives I now have, it would have to be my Frost Bowie knife which I just had sharpened on my recent trip to SMKW.  And I wouldn't fight a bear with a knife unless it were my only hope.

If I were in an area where I thought I might run into a bear, if I weren't carrying my .30-06, I would at least be packing my Ruger Blackhawk .45 Colt loaded with heavy Ruger only loads.

This discussion reminds me of an incident that happened a few years ago in Smoky Mountain National Park in an area known as Cades Cove.  A black bear killed a woman.  A park ranger killed the bear with his 9 mm pistol.

Granted, I would much rather have my .45 on a bear than a knife. BUT if that's all you had, I choose the KaBar.

They say Black Bears are more apt to kill and eat you than a Grizzly.

What about some other situations? Under knifed or over knifed?

Here is a picture of my Frost Bowie.  If I had to go at a bear with one of my knives, this would be the one I would want.

Blade ten inches, handle 5 1/2 inches, full tang, 3/16 inches thick blade

Charles, That knife looks like it could make some nasty wounds. The 10" blade would be deep penetration, and just might make the difference. Thanks for posting.

Many in the past have sworn by the Case Peanut and there are stories to verify that fact. BUT would carrying a Peanut cause you to be under-knifed in many cases????

The "way" to kill a grizzly bear with a knife is to back up to a tree and as he comes to hug you (bearhug). Slit his throat. Works every time, just ask Gritts.(world famous indiand hunter and all around mountian man)
