Welcome Home...THANK YOU FOR BEING A PART OF OUR COMMUNITY

PLEASE ASSIST SOON! First, thank you to the few who welcomed me. Please tell me what these knives are worth. They are being sold at a local estate sale early this Saturday morning. I wanted to attend. However, I'm recovery from major surgery that will prevent me from walking and driving for some time. They want $350 firm for the Morseth. I don't know anything more about either knife. I believe all items will be half price near noon. I greatly enjoy collecting/using knives; however, I can't afford to be taken.
Thank you!

Jan - Something something about family or a tight-knit group, and that's what we do....right?

Lars and Bryan,

OMG thank you for taking the reins on this and helping Thomas come to an " as informed a decision as possible" in his situation.

Thomas,

Not being able to be hands on with something like this is frustrating.  I do believe you may have made the right decision

Good eye and call on the stag Bryan! You're absolutely right - that is mighty pretty stag for "vintage".

Thomas - I can certainly appreciate how you must feel on passing up this opportunity. I too - as many of us here at iKC can probably attest - have done the same thing. However, my disappointment on passing up an opportunity has never been as great as my regret for a bad purchase!

So - now that we know you enjoy Morseth knives, we invite you to share some photos of yours, or ones on your "want" list. Maybe even start a Morseth group....let iKC help be your eyes for other opportunities. I know I have been successful in locating some Colt pieces I've wanted through the group, as have others with their favorites.

Here's to you and your healing from your surgery - Na Zdrowie!

Thank you for your guidance Bryan.  At this point I believe I'll pass on buying either of these knives.  I've just had major surgery.   I can't walk nor drive to see these knives.  It's better I don't take a chance.  It will save me money and possible disappointment.  Tom Rutherford

ALSO.  The cut and shaping of that stag handle are questionable.  What is the purpose?  Does it make sense?  How is the quality of the details?  LOOK carefully!!!

Be careful on that Morseth.  LOOK at the knife and sheath.  That sheath looks sloppy in its stitching.  Is it original?  Wear?  Age?

The handle of the Morseth looks VERY clean to be vintage.  Stag should not be blinding white if its old.  Without other pictures, that's all I can offer beyond the excellent contributions below!

Hi Tom - first, welcome to iKC!

I don't know much about Morseth knives...in fact what I know you could probably learn with about an hour's research. In addition, "vintage" means different things to different people - classically it is anything 20 years or older (Etsy standard). However, with only this photo provided, here are some good questions to ask the seller to help determine their value:

1 - are the knives from Steve Morseth the founder (1936-1967), or Steve Morseth the Grandson (1961-1971); Both would be considered "vintage", but one more valuable than the other...presumably.

2 - If unknown, then consider too these may be "Morseth kit" knives as sold by A.G. Russell as "S. Morseth" knives (1971-1995), which is how they marked them when they bought the brand from Steve Morseth the younger in 1971.

3 - does the Morseth knife sheath have the "safe-lok" system? Steve Morseth the elder patented this system for all his hunting knives back in 1953. It's hard to tell for certain in this photo.

4 - with all I can find, every Morseth knife has "Morseth" stamped on it; some blades also have steel type stamped (i.e. 154cm, Brusletto, etc.). This alone won't tell age, but it will help narrow the field. What markings do these knives have, and where on the blade is it stamped?

5 - what are Morseth's going for on the Internet? I've seen everything from $600 to $1200. $350 firm seems a little low for an authentic Morseth, but it may be priced to sell. It does seem appropriate (to me anyway) for an A.G. Russell released blade.

6 - lastly - with all these answered, if it's too good to be true, then it probably is. Or, you just may have found the next "deal of the lifetime".

While I cannot help you in determining their values, I hope this helps you in your decision making process. Since you state you can't afford to be taken, your best strategy is to be as well informed as you can be. Good luck....and be sure to share your outcome! We all want to know how you did.
