Welcome Home...THANK YOU FOR BEING A PART OF OUR COMMUNITY

So last year I built a knife which was in the largest part designed by committee.

This year I'd love to do the same. I've got a number of projects that I'd like to finish. But I'd really enjoy a run up to this new one.

Just in case you missed last years here are a couple of links so you can check it out. It ended up looking like this:

The initial thread: http://www.iknifecollector.com/profiles/blogs/a-knife-by-comittee-c...

Part 2: http://www.iknifecollector.com/profiles/blogs/the-comittee-knife-pa...

The final thread: http://www.iknifecollector.com/profiles/blogs/the-final-committee-k...

So now that we've gotten the introductions out of the way for those I weren't involved last time:

What am I going to build this time? Last time I wanted to stay limited to what I had in stock on materials. This year there's no such restriction. Any steel, (provided I can get my grubby little hands on it) and any handle materials is fair game (provided I can afford it:-)).

Any design and any feature as long as it's a fixed blade. So how about we start brainstorming?

Let's start with the size? How big would you like this blade to be? How about the handle?

3"blade for EDC? 4-5" blade for Hunting? 2" blade for office carry? 6" blade or larger? Bowie sized? Camp chopper?

And keep in mind, just like last year, majority (or the law of averages) rules!

I'll try to not influence what the group decided because as the maker of the knife I have influence enough already.

Let's get talking. I hope to get started on the knife in about 2,5 months!

(ps, if there's certain knives you like that have certain features that you like. Just show them off and tell us about the things you like about it.

Blade size first! Then we'll start talking blade shape, Blade steel! handle type and shape and materials!

Last offcourse is the sheath!

Well, the initial rounds are all done! On to the finals! CLippoint VS Spearpoint with a dagger swedge VS Wharncliffe!

And the final winner is:

The Wharncliffe bladeshape.

So now we've got a 4" Whanrcliffe. We'll need to figure out type and thickness of the steel.

So what do you guys want to see? I'll work with anything I can get my hands on for this one. Start shouting out your suggestions! I'll compile all suggestions and we'll have another vote on it.

Just for idea's sake.

In the past I've worked with 1095, Niolox, 52100, damascus, Damasteel (stainless powder damascus), old files. But I can also get my hands on 10V (thin stock) probably on CPM154, S30V, S35V, S90V, D2, 1080, W1, W2, O1, O2, etc etc etc. Most common thickness for a 4"blade is probably around 3mm or 1/8". But we can go thicker or thinner depening on the steel selected.

Do you want a massively thick blade that could function as a pry bar? Or a thin slicey beast?

Seriously, I'll try anything....

Well...it's been almost a week now. If I don't start getting replies I'll be scrapping the project. Not much use building a committee knife if there's no committee participating.

well bro you know my answer...build it...

Not a fan of Wharncliffes, but something fairly thick in CPM154 or S30V would be my choice...maybe not prybar thick, but durable thick...

So something thick in a well known stainless?

but something fairly thick in CPM154...I like it

Im not a huge wharnie guy either...but thick with a high hollow grind would be good.

cpm154 i could deal with.. WHARN!!!  ps-the knife at the top of this post looks so familiar...hehe!

agree about the high hollow grind!

Hollow huh. I'll have to make some changes to my grinder and practise a few hollow grinds first but I'm willing to give it a try.

Yup, hollow is the way to go for sure.
