Welcome Home...THANK YOU FOR BEING A PART OF OUR COMMUNITY

I've always liked knives with deeply etched and colored pictures on the blades.  Just recently I started wondering how is the picture actually done?  Is "etch" the correct term, or are they engraved?  One young fellow suggested laser engraving.  How are the colors done?  Now Spyderco is doing something similar except the picture rises above the surface, not cut into the surface.  How do they do that?  Here is a photo of some in my collection. 4 Bulldogs, a Battle Axe, a Case and a Spyderco.

Rusty,

I would assume etched.  Donnie's etching maching has the ability to do colored etchings on metal.  I dont know how the raised one would be done

If it's the Spyderco in the picture that you're thinking of? I don't think it's raised above the steel at all. It's a laser engraving of some kind. But because it has texture and the surrounding metal doesn't it kind of feels like it's raised.

Thanks Jan & Alex, you've given me something to think about.
